  • Family-friendly smallholding in a rural location on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Spectacular views towards the peak of Moelypenmaen
  • Lots of open space for kids to play
Get back to nature among spectacular surroundings with a stay at Gwynedd's Rhos Y Foel, in the middle of the Llŷn Peninsula a short drive from more lush landscapes at Snowdonia National Park. Set with views towards the rocky peak of Moelypenmaen, Rhos Y Foel is a small and family-friendly site, with a wide swathe of open space on which the kids can let loose. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Rhos Y Foel is a level and almost completely flat site – no uncomfy bumpy groundsheet nights here – and has a facilities block with hot running water. Off-ground barbecues are allowed and firepits are available on site: for supplies, the local village is Boduan and the shops and services of market town Pwllheli are a few miles away.

2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: We stayed in the static caravan for 3 nights - the van was well equipped, beds very comfortable and little extras like hand wash, toilet paper and towels. The layout of the van was great and free standing sofa and dining table ans chairs made the van feel more homely than fixed furniture. Beautiful views from caravan. Lovely walks down the local lanes, which we're enjoyed by all of us including the dog. Perfect location to explore this area of Wales and many different beaches to visit all within a short drive.

Disliked: Advertised with washing machine. This was not in the caravan but onsite facilities with an additional cost.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: What a lovely, caring, and hardworking host! The campsite is maintained impeccably. The staff on-site are welcoming and very helpful. There are lovely locations within a 15-minute drive to some legendary spots in the area. I love the quietness of the place, the amazing views of the mountains from my pitch, and the super hot shower, which is almost like a steam sauna—a bonus for wet, chilly days. I do recommend this place, and I'll be back for sure.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Very tidy and well kept site with excellent staff. The scenery is stunning and it’s so peaceful. Plenty of space if kids want to play and a nice walk of cycle track near by. The staff were great, we dealt with a lady called Marta who couldn’t do enough for us and she was really friendly. she’s a credit to the site. All the essentials you’d need on site and toilets and showers kept clean and tidy. Would 100% come back!

Disliked: Maybe a hosepipe so you could fill your Motorhome up a little easier

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Owner Sam and warden Marta both really friendly. Weather was rubbish before we arrived so ground a bit boggy, but Sam emailed us in advance to advise us and we were given the driest pitches. When we were there he checked in every day to see how we were getting on, seen what had been up to. Weather certainly not his fault, we did go camping in the wettest March known to man. Marta was the same, always friendly and keeping everywhere clean and checking in whenever she saw us asking what we’d been up to. Had a kettle boiled for us with a few cups when we arrived too. Given the weather I thought this was a really nice touch. Facilities really clean despite it being a really muddy weekend. Felt like the toilets and showers cleaned straight after you used them, never saw them dirty. Felt bad for all the mud on our wellies, but they were clean next time you used them. There were two toilets for men, two for women and one unisex toilet with a disabled ramp if you’re travelling with someone who may need this. Also a washer and drier which Marta showed us on arrival, but we didn’t end up needing (I think it took 20ps I may be wrong). Two individual showers, which were great. Not those push button ones, proper showers and hot. Location is great, site was really quiet so great for us with small kids. Noise curfew at 10pm a bonus. Only 15 minutes from a few beaches and town of Pwllheli. The view of the stars at night were unbelievable. Would definitely recommend. Fire bins for hire with more wood than you can use, some kindling and fire lighter for £10. Delivered straight to your pitch.

Disliked: Only slight negative would be lack of private washing facilities for ladies. There was one private unisex toilet with a sink, but not sure if the hot water was broke or we couldn’t figure out how to work it. Not the end of the world as site was so quiet the other toilets were always free. If site was full though might get pushed for space.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great site, facilities excellent, really good showers. Location spot on 10 mins drive to Nerfyn & Pwellwi. Dogs welcome which was lovely. Jodie & Sam were really helpful especially as we were first timers and the weather was not great to say the least. We’ll be back… next year when hopefully the sun will shine 😀

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!!

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great location with lots of nice touches. Unfortunately the sink/toilet area was somewhat basic and the water was cold. The showers didn’t look very inviting but actually had plenty of hot water. With such wet ground we didn’t venture across the field to the hardstanding pitches otherwise we wouldn’t have got off so the owner kindly allowed us to stay on the entrance roadway. I believe access roadways are part of future improvements.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice location and well presented site. Owner and managers very friendly and helpful. Shower room didn’t appeal visually but had plenty of hot water. Nice quiet site but transport is always required as it is remote from any towns or places of interest.

Disliked: The field was too wet to drive across to the hardstanding pitch so we parked in the entrance driveway as the campsite as very quiet at the end of the season. We believe that new roadways will be installed to avoid the same problem in the future. The toilet block facilities are very basic but clean and the sink had no hot water. Hot water was available in the outside sinks used for washing up.

Local attractions

As you'll know if you've ever had the sense to go there, the Llŷn Peninsula is lovely land, with sea all around as it jabs 30 miles into the Irish Sea from north-west Wales's tip. Rhos Y Foel is in an excellent setting to get to the best of its hills and coast in the site surrounds, and to explore the mountains and other highlights of Snowdonia a short drive away. Around the peninsula, have seaside days at resorts like Abersoch, Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn and Pwllheli, all just a few miles away, or get active with afternoons among the wakeboarding, bowling, quad biking, go karting and fishing of Glasfryn Parc nearby at Pwllheli; soft play, food, a farm shop and a bar are at this latter as well. Paintball is nearby if you want to take things up a notch. Another top local option for families is the award-winning GreenWood Forest Park, where you can paddle among trees, make things work at the world's only people-powered rollercoaster, see a live show, meet the animals or try den building and archery. More animal meeting is at Dwyfor Rabbit Farm, or drive to the foot of Snowdonia for a more active family day out at Gypsy Wood. The famed 18-hole Nefyn & District Golf Club at Porthdinllaen is only a few minutes from the site.
