Soft spot for steam trains? Make tracks for Rhosfawr Caravan and Camping Park and you’ll have three heritage lines to travel, all of them climbing through the fine scenery of Snowdonia National Park. This family-friendly site in Gwynedd is 10 minutes’ drive from Pwllheli and makes a top base for steam safaris and seaside days, hill walks and castle tours. And when you’ve climbed every mountain (apologies to Julie Andrews…), it’s a spacious spot to stretch out in and soak up the views. While you’re soaking you can be sure the smaller members of your party are safe: the site’s set back a long way from the main road down a driveway, so there’s ample room for larking about, along with a playground. Appetites expanded by all that outdoor activity can soon be satisfied during high season, as during this time the site sells ice cream and lollies. If you need more in the way of provisions, there are shops and supermarkets in Pwllheli, and barbecues and campfires are permitted back on site.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Small site and we could park alongside the tent so no need to ferry things across fields, Kevin was great showing us around and saving the day lending us something we'd forgotten at home. Plenty of other kids for my lad to play with, and site was quiet of an evening. Pwllheli beach and Glasfryn Parc made for decent days out.

Disliked: Being so close to the sea in the mornings everything is that wet you'll think it rained through the night, that said it made for some beautiful sunrises. Some of the play equipment was a little worn and showing it's age, but still safe and usable. Phone signal was limited, had to travel into Pwllheli for any kind of reliable data connection

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The play area for kids, the free to use bikes n footballs, no where I've camped in wales as of yet had had that, the runners of the camp were extremely friendly and didn't mind us taking a few pics of his spotless old rover, all in all a lovely camp site

Disliked: Only gripe really is paying for the showers, this was a first for us

Local attractions

Active family? Report to Glasfryn Parc (10 minutes' drive) for go-karting and Segway rides, archery, wakeboarding and 10-pin bowling. Those with further energies to burn can take to the waters at Pwllheli for kayaking, windsurfing and paddleboarding or zipwire their way through ZipWorld Slate Caverns (45 minutes) finishing off with bounces on the underground trampolines and feats of daring on the caverns’ high ropes. It doesn’t have to be all busy busy on the beach though: Pwllheli’s wide sands make a grand venue for long seaside walks and Barmouth an hour away is a 'bucket and spade and donkey ride' sort of place with sea trips and estuary cruises for those who just like to sit. Brought your boots? It’s a 10-minute drive to Nefyn, where you can link up with the Wales Coast Path, and 40 minutes to National Trust-protected Craflwyn and Beddgelert for trails through the Aberglaslyn Pass, wanders to Cwm Llan waterfall and multi-use paths around the wildlife-filled shores of Llyn Dinas lake. Whether you take one train into the hills or tick off the lot, a steam ride is a must-do: the puffers of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway lines depart Porthmadog (25 minutes) for both Caernarfon and Blaenau Ffestiniog, while coal-fired trips to the sometimes snowy top of Mount Snowdon leave from Llanberis (45 minutes).
