  • Custom-made shepherd's hut in a meadow setting
  • Buy fresh eggs, milk and locally sourced bread and bacon on site
  • Country pub a few minutes' walk away
Have you ever bedded down in a shepherd's hut in Wales? If your next hol is north Wales-based and your fancy is tickled by having a site to your very own selves, you'll have a splendid time at The Hut at Hafod Las. This is all you need for topping Welsh glamping: the well-equipped shepherd's hut here is custom made and comes with a big sofa that changes into a full-size double bed to snuggle down on. The log burner keeps all toasty on cooler nights and there's also an outside dining area and barbecue. And it's in a top Welsh setting, 15 minutes' drive from Wrexham and in a meadow on the outskirts of the handsome little village of Minera with spiffing views of the surrounding countryside. For boozy beverages, a country pub serving a wide range of traditional ales as well as food is a few minutes' walk away. Hafod Las has private access, off-road parking and secure storage for bikes. Breakfast packs with eggs from the Hafod Las hens, milk, and bread, sausages and bacon (sourced from the Wrexham area) are available to buy on site. Here without a car? The local bus stop is a short stroll away to hail the regular services to Wrexham town centre. (Bus timetables are available on site.)

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We just loved the Hut from arrival. It is placed in a great private location, and yet so near to the village. It is immaculately clean, tastefully decorated out with a sheep theme, lots of hot water, and the shower is amazing. We bought the breakfast pack and this was of very good quality bacon, sausage, eggs and bread - all local - as well as the milk, butter, and baked beans provided. (Good value). Whilst eating our breakfast outside we were entertained to the most fantastic bird song. We stayed for two nights, and ate both nights at the local inn which was only 4-5 minutes walk from the Shepherds Hut, and the meals there were very good. We booked ahead on the owner's advice and we could see why as it is very popular. Directions to the Hut were also excellent, and provided by the owners. Therefore no problems in finding it. The owners were even good enough as an extra to provide a Birthday Cake and Bunting, at my request, so arrival was extra special for my husband. We really do hope to revisit 'The Hut at Hafod Las' in the future, and will most certainly be recommending to our family and friends. Thank you for a great stay.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The attention to detail, the clever design of the hut with a lovely warm shower and super comfy bed that converted into seating for the day time. The fire pit and location, the feeling of being secluded whilst having the pub a few minutes away was exactly what we were looking for. Thanks for a lovely break!

Disliked: Nothing.

Route directions

Detailed directions and arrangements for collecting the key will be emailed to you prior to your stay. Directions from A483 Wrexham: Take the A525 towards Ruthin. After about 2 miles look out for a fuel station on your left-hand side. A short distance after this take a left turn opposite a pub called The Five Crosses, this will be signposted to Minera. You will go over a couple of speed bumps and will see the school on your left. There will be a telephone box and a bus stop in front of you and you need to take the right fork. This goes uphill and you will pass the pub on your left and church on your right. Our road (Cae Glas Lane) is first on the right after the church - just after a paddock with iron railings.

Local attractions

Wrexham, north Wales and shenanigans across the border in England are all easily reached from The Hut at Hafod Las – and you can be in Liverpool, Manchester or Snowdonia National Park within an hour. Very close to home, the ancient village of Minera and its surroundings will keep historians happy, from the pilgrimage routes trodden by monks of years gone by to the area's lead mines and quarries. Two National Trust properties within easy reach of the shepherd's hut and historyheads will likely be most pleased with the World Heritage Site at Pontcysyllte... Hikers will also be happy as the Offa's Dyke Path and the Clywedog Trail are both close by, as well as quiet lanes and paths; if you prefer to race around at a faster pace, a mountain bike centre is very close to Hafod Las and riding stables and an off-road driving centre are a few minutes' drive away. Birdwatchers, climbers, pony trekkers and quad bikers will also find what they fancy in the area – and if you're a food fancier, the first-rate pubs and restaurants in the area should see you sorted too.
