  • Alpaca farm on the edge of the Preseli Mountains in Carmarthenshire
  • A short walk from a woodland stream; pubs within 15 minutes’ drive
  • Shared kitchenette, communal barbecue and heated pod all included
On the edge of the Preseli Mountains, glorious views across animal paddocks and over the valley await at Bybrook Alpacas, a cosy and peaceful Carmarthenshire site surrounded by lush green countryside. The big draw of this place is the peace and quiet (and the resident Shetland ponies, the sheep and the woolly alpacas of course), but there’s plenty nearby to keep the whole family entertained – from getting to grips with the Preseli Mountains on bike or foot to thrills at nearby adventure parks. The towns of Whitland and Narberth – and their pubs, restaurants and supermarkets – are both about 15 minutes away by car. From the farm, a short wander takes you into the surrounding woodlands, where you can amble beside the small stream while the kids play in the woods. Of an evening, plonk yourself on the picnic table outside, fire up the barbecue, light the log fire and relax – what better way to pass the time than with good food and drink by a roaring fire? Facilities on site include a toilet, shower and kitchenette kitted out with microwave, kettle, and fridge, also cutlery, crockery and cookware (good news for folk planning to travel light). There is mains electricity in the kitchenette and pod, with a heater in the pod to take the chill off if the weather gets a bit cold.

Liked: I really enjoyed my 3 nights at Bybrook Alpacas Camping Pod. The pod itself was big enough for me and dog and was very clean and warm. It had double bed, small sofa and fridge. There is also a fully equipped Kitchen with Kettle, microwave, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans which is ideal when trying to travel light, everything so clean. Next to Kitchen is working W.C. and shower which is also clean and warm and there is plenty of room to change. Outside you have gas barbecue for cooking and fire pit with benches to sit around on an evening. The pods decking also has picnic bench which is great to sit and watch sunset and Alpacas while eating dinner and sun loungers (not that I used them) for them hot summer days. The ground is kept tidy and plenty of walks to go on with the dog. You are sounded by the Farm life Alpacas, sheep, horses but still so tranquil. Never heard them the whole time was there. The owner Malcolm is very friendly and explained some interesting places to visit.

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay, the pod was lovely cozy and clean, the kitchen and bathroom were well equipped and clean. Quiet and peaceful. Owners were friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Nothing. I only put the four stars on child friendliness as I took my 15month old and the little steps outside the pod were one to watch him with... But that wasn't really a big problem as the older two children kept an eye on him

Liked: Gorgeous place. Clean and comfortable, the bed and pillows were super comfy. Everything you need is provided including a mini fridge, kettle, microwave and all kitchen utensils. The hosts are extremely warm and friendly and asked if we would like to fees the alpacas. Our neighbours were 2 ponies and a horse and they were super friendly. The cabin is warm and cosy and we loved our stay. Definitely want to come back again.

Disliked: Having to go home, it was idyllic! WiFi wouldn't have been nice but it's also good to escape, and get back to nature.

Local attractions

If the adorable alpacas have left you wanting more animal encounters, set off to Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (20 minutes' drive) or to Clerkenhill Adventure Farm & Frizbee Golf Course (that’s animals and some pretty competitive frisbee chucking all in one place). For rainy days, take cover at Bluestone Adventure Centre (20 minutes) where the indoor shenanigans include miniature golf, climbing frames, soft play areas, bouncy castles and diggers to drive. Or cool off at Blue Lagoon Water Park (20 minutes) as you race down rides, rapid rivers and flumes. For a bit of sightseeing, snap-worthy spots include 13th-century Cilgerran Castle (25 minutes), Pentre Ifan burial chamber (30 minutes) and Castell Henllys Iron Age hill fort (half an hour). If the coast is calling, pack up your beach bag and head south to some of the area’s sandy hotspots – Saundersfoot is around half an hour away, Tenby 35 minutes and Pendine Sands about 40 minutes.
