  • Well-maintained and dog-friendly site on the outskirts of Porthcawl
  • A five-minute drive to Rest Bay beach on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast
  • Shop, wifi, play area, undercover picnic area and indoor games room
‘Seclusion without sacrificing easy access to local attractions’ is the promise at family-run Brodawel Camping Park on the edge of Nottage, and this dog-friendly spot definitely delivers. A stay at this peaceful place, a five-minute drive from the golden beaches of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the amenities of Porthcawl, is an excellent choice for investigating a lesser-known part of the Welsh seaside. Facilities on site are also fab: there’s a shop for grabbing everything from windbreakers to booze and a kids’ play area plus a family games room for the small fry. A free charging point at the undercover picnic area means you can get your gadgets juiced up, whether for using the site’s wifi to stream TV series on your tablet using the site wifi or to prep your phone for using as a GPS ahead of roaming the Welsh Coast Path. The south Wales seaside is within a 40-minute stroll – Brodawel is the closest site to Rest Bay (a 40-minute walk), one of the best beaches in the area, and there are a handful of other cute coves to seek out within a short drive. Head to Southerndown and Ogmore (20 minutes) for walks on wilder beaches (but make sure to visit during low tide when the sea’s out). This park’s not content with simply allowing you to amble aimlessly in the area your whole hol long – although you can easily do that in the surrounding open countryside – recommending all sorts of watersports and dry-land adventures to embark on. Give surfing, sea kayaking, paddleboarding, coasteering and white-water rafting a go, or try rock climbing, quad biking, fat biking and mountain biking.

Local attractions

When the tide is out, there’s miles and miles’ worth of coast to rove, with caves and rockpools to rummage in as well for pebbles and shells. If the sea’s in, get your fix of sand at the Merthyr Mawr dunes (20-minute drive) – the largest one, the 200-foot Big Dipper, is the second-biggest of its sort in Europe. After rolling down said dune, seek other thrills on the rides at Coney Island, an old-school fairground sitting right next to Porthcawl town. Not so fond of amusements but are gagging for a go on the green? Treat yourself to a turn at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club – it’s one of Wales’ most well-known courses and is less than a 10-minute drive from Brodawel.
