  • Family-friendly glampsite with spectacular countryside views
  • Half an hour from Cardiff and Brecon Beacons
  • Hot tub, wood store, shared larder, books and games
Want the freedom of a camping hol without that whole sharing bathrooms, traipsing through mud, sleeping on the ground thing? Then head to Under the Oak Glamping for luxe stays on a family-friendly glampsite a little over half an hour’s drive from Cardiff city centre. Tucked away in a peaceful corner of a traditional family farm, the site is next to a pretty pond and is well placed to make the most of the stunning views across the countryside. When the outside world beckons, it’s just 15 minutes to the small Glamorgan town of Caerphilly, where there’s a castle to explore, a golf club for days on the links and a handful of bars and restaurants to sort local eats. Time to shut out the world for the evening? Fire up the woodburning stove and cook up a storm in the kitchen (order a hamper or toss a fiver in the honesty box to stock up on wood and basics on site), then settle down with a book or game to get cosy. Each unit has its own woodfired hot tub and is pet-friendly. More adventurous guests might not want to turn in just yet – there’s a firepit next to the pond for barbecues and meeting the neighbours, and private woodfired hot tubs for unravelling aches and pains after long days of adventures... or an evening of stargazing on the veranda might be just the ticket to soothe busy minds before bed.

Liked: We had a spectacular stay. The abode has all the basic essentials required but without the scarcity. There are supermarkets such as Tesco, co-op, Aldi all within 10 mins drive. It’s fantastic for inexperienced campers to get a feeling of what to be expected sleeping in the outdoors but access to comfort. Do come prepared with all seasons clothing as tent can cool down in the nights and early morning, there is a wood fire burner there it’s quite narrow so does need regular wood. You can buy a 25kg bag for £7. The hot tub is essentially a xxl bath with seats. This required at-least a 25kg bag of woods to get going, but once it’s warmed up it can get pretty hot and will last the day into the evening. You may get away with purchasing logs externally for this but their bags are better value for money so highly recommend. There’s a small fridge which will fit your essentials with top layer designed for freezing. There’s a toaster and double gas hob with plenty of pans, and pots to get cooking. I loved this stay so much, I didn’t think this beauty existed so close to home without needing a drive to the airport and beyond. The hits are very thoughtfully laid out, with vast space and hidden away from each other so you get the feeling of being isolated and having the green all to yourself. Just a small pointed that this is located so close to a town that you do get the sound of hospital helicopter from time to time, the odd loud car in the distance (Saturday night) but for the most part it’s idyllic. Don’t think twice just do it. But take all weather clothes to be safe. British weather after all 🤞🏽

Disliked: Maybe just my like the tractor went of in the neck few fields most of the morning then at night the helicopter was doing its rounds for about 2 hours. Doubt it’s an everyday occurrence though.

Local attractions

Active types are well catered for round here: the edge of Brecon Beacons National Park is about 35 minutes’ drive from base for hikes and waterfall trails, adrenaline flows freely at BikePark Wales mountain biking centre (35 minutes) and there’s a climbing centre a little over 20 minutes away if the great wide open is too daunting. More competitive guests might prefer paintball or laser quest, both of which can be done within half an hour of the site. More sedate getaways can be had with leisurely explores around some of the nearby historical sites: Castell Coch, Raglan Castle, Ogmore Castle and Skenfrith Castle are all within an hour, and a pitstop (sorry) at Big Pit National Coal Museum comes highly recommended for underground tours with real miners. If a taste of grandeur is required, jaunts should be made to Llancaiach Fawr Manor, 25 minutes away, and the ruined Tintern Abbey (55 minutes), or into Cardiff to poke around Mansion House and Insole Court. There’s plenty else to do in the city too, from brewery tours to science discovery centres, to ice skating arenas. For those quintessential holiday beach days, there are a handful of sandy beaches within about an hour of site, and surfing fans can travel the two hours to Aberaeron to catch some waves.
