  • Shepherd's hut in pretty gardens close to the village of Pendoylan
  • A 20-minute drive from Cardiff and the coast
  • Ensuite bathroom and kitchenette; firepits and barbecues to hire
A cosy place to stay, in a chilled-out country setting? Cardiff, castles and the coast within a 20-minute drive? Country pubs a couple of miles away... just how many top-holiday boxes does Duffryn Mawr tick? (Answer: a lot.) What a splendid south Wales spot this is – home to a smart shepherd’s hut in equally smartly dressed gardens (pretty by day and festooned with fairy lights by night). There’s village life in Pendoylan, a mile away, and Peterston-super-Ely, two miles away (and home to a couple of fab pubs), but you’d also do well to swing over to Cowbridge (15 minutes' drive) for supermarket supplies before settling in for an evening by the barbecue or firepit, both of which can be hired on site. Coast walks, horse riding, beaches and woodland bike rides are all on the menu for folk who fancy a slice of the quiet life, and the fine city of Cardiff is a 20-minute drive away for dipping a toe back into urban life (or hitting museums, shops, bars, theatres, rugby matches…) Even the ins and outs are easily sorted here, as it’s a simple five-minute journey from the M4 by car and there’s bike storage for two-wheeled travellers (subject to availability).

The Hideaway shepherd's hut

Liked: Friendly people, and the cutest little hut, perfect for a quiet getaway for 1 or 2 people, set in a lovely garden.

Disliked: Just a few minor things which the owners would be aware of if they packed a bag and spent a night in the hut as if they were a guest. The door is difficult to lock and has a knack that we had to ask about - it is also very stiff and would be tricky for someone with arthritis. Bathroom needs a bit of a clean but, to be fair, the cobwebs round the ceiling only show up when you are having a shower. The folding dining table isn't very practical now the wall-folding bed has been swapped for a sofa bed, as it is in the way of the table. A few toys in the garden would be fun - swingball, perhaps.

The Hideaway shepherd's hut

Liked: We arrived for a short break and to our surprise had been upgraded from a Hut to the Loft (cottage). As we were there for five days and I was working for three of them, the owners had decided that it would be more comfortable for us which was very generous and thoughtful of them. The location is very nice, but as they appear to do livery there, it was surprisingly busy. It was close to Cardiff where I was working and also close to the coast and the motorway, so we had easy access to Caerphilly and other sights. Early signs were promising, there was good wi-fi and reasonable facilities (freezer compartment would help) and it was spacious.

Disliked: The main problem we had was the tag 'Dog Friendly'. This was true to the point that you could have dogs in the accommodation, but they could not reasonably go outside even supervised. The main culprit being a dog of the owners: they had mentioned that he didn't like other dogs so be careful which I thought was the wrong way round. They know the dog, they should keep guests (including dogs) safe from their pet. In the event our dog was attacked by theirs and even when it sought refuge in our accommodation, their dog followed and the two were separated only when the owner dragged their dog off ours. Needless to say this was traumatic for the dog but also my wife who had been desperately trying to separate them. Here's the thing: don't allow your dog out with free range of the property if he is likely to attack another dog - it is the owners responsibility not the guests. For the owner to have 'mentioned it' when we arrived does not excuse it - in fact it makes it worse. We had no idea that could happen, they knew it would and still they allowed the possibility for it. My advice is don't advertise as dog friendly then let an unfriendly dog roam free on your premises: that is simply irresponsible both as a property owner and a dog owner.

The Hideaway shepherd's hut

Liked: The location and the shepherd's hut The Hideaway was just what I needed to recharge my battery on a weekend when so many sad memories where very much on my mind. From arrival I noticed one significant noise or lack of to be exact, emergency vehicle sirens! I only live in a small town in Somerset but there just seems to be so many sirens going every day, the weekend gave me a much needed break from them. The weather wasn't great but I made the most of my time there.

Local attractions

Coming for countryside? Head out for walks all around the site, detour to Dyffryn Gardens (15 minutes’ drive) or take trips to the area’s castles – Castell Coch (15 minutes) and Caerphilly Castle (20 minutes) are among some of the finest in all the land. Golfing types will be well sorted here too – you could easily play a different course every day for a week, before tackling the famed Celtic Manor course (half an hour) at the end. Coast caught your eye? A 20-minute drive will get you to the dunes around Merthyr Mawr, or to Ogmore-by-Sea to ride horses through the shallows or play on the sands (or take in a couple more castles…) Surf types can hit the waves at Southerndown with a drive of around 25 minutes; there’s a surf school here too for those who haven't yet mastered the art. Time for city life? Cardiff’s about a 20-minute drive away, and packed with things to do. The excellent St Fagans National Museum of History is a popular pick (and not just because it’s free…) and there's also a go-kart track, a whitewater rafting centre, top-class shows at the Wales Millennium Centre… and another castle (but of course).
