It's really just as well there are spectacular vistas from Clyne Farm Centre overlooking Swansea Bay and a couple of miles from the Gower beaches – for you'll likely want to sit and stare at the scenery while recovering from whatever activities you've been up to that day. This is a site for active sorts: the farm surrounding the campsite has been used by keen Scout and Guide groups since before World War II, and these days the centre attached to the campsite can see you sorted for a dizzying array of outdoor options. The activities on offer at Clyne Farm Centre include horse riding, archery, gorge walking, indoor climbing, body boarding, surfing, Segway racing, mountain biking, outdoor survival courses' and 'the muddiest assault course in the world – as we say, you'll likely want to sit and stare at the scenery of an evening while you recover. The campsite itself is nicely spacious – the Clyne Farm Centre team limit the number of tents on site at any time so things don't feel overcrowded – and has a pick of pitches in either the main camping field, or the woodland area accessed via a steepish stone drive through fields. Don't fret if you get rained out either, a stone barn is on site for emergency rainy use. A decent range of facilities is on site including newly added solar -powered shower rooms with communal and family rooms, loos, changing rooms and – possibly our Clyne Farm fave – a washing-up room in a restored railway wagon; the hot water here is solar-powered too. The main office building comes equipped with a pool table, table tennis, vending machines and free wifi; guests can buy sweets, drinks, food and milk at reception. To line stomachs properly before a day's activities, the 'Mabinogion Feast' fry-up or cereal and toast are both available to buy in the main centre (book in reception the day before). Car parking is available for both sets of pitches about 50 yards away from each: you can drive to the entrance of the main camping fields to unload your kit.

Route directions

The site is just 3 miles from the centre of Swansea. If you travelling west (eg from London), leave the M4 at Briton Ferry (Junction 42) on the A483, signposted Swansea. Pick up the signs for Mumbles and South Gower as you enter the city. Continue straight ahead on the A4067. This is a main road which follows the path of the shoreline of Swansea Bay with the sea on your left. If you are travelling east (eg from Pembrokeshire) on the M4, leave at Junction 47 and take the A483. Pick up the signs for Sketty and Singleton Hospital. After 3 miles, pass the hospital on your left and turn right at the traffic lights signposted Mumbles, onto the A4067 - pass the playing fields before Blackpill and then follow the instructions below. After 3 miles, pass the university on your right, then the playing fields on your right and a 9-hole golf course on your left. You will then enter the small village of Blackpill. There is a children's paddling pool lido area on the left. Here you need to be in the right-hand lane. Just past the Woodman Pub (on your right) and the Murco Petrol station (on the left), turn right onto the B4436 Mayals Road at the part-time traffic lights (right turn only as you are in the right-hand lane), following the brown and white tourist signs for South Gower and Clyne Farm Centre. Follow Mayals Road up the hill. You will be passing Clyne Gardens (behind a walled area) on your right. Take the first turning on the right (after about half a mile) into Westport Avenue. (If you start to drive into an area with common land either side of the road then you have gone too far!) Drive through the houses to the top of the hill and turn right where you see the green Clyne Farm Centre sign. The office and reception area is on the left of the farmhouse. From Mumbles If you are coming from Mumbles, drive along the main coast road (A4067) towards Swansea for about 2 miles. Turn left onto the B4436 Mayals Road (left-hand filter lane) and follow the directions above from that point.

Local attractions

If you've any energy left after taking on the challenges of the activity centre, you'll find a good amount locally to tire you and the kids out. The coastline a couple of miles away is a beauty: Gower was the first ever Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain and is known worldwide for its wide sandy beaches including Rhossili Bay, voted Britain's best beach and one of the top ten beaches in the world. (It was also once voted the UK's best picnic spot, so bring a basket). Hitting the cities, Swansea is about 15 minutes away and buzzing with very lively nightlife as well as loads of other indoor attractions like shops, ten-pin bowling, the National Waterfront Museum and the LC Leisure Centre and waterpark. If you're a footie fan, cheer on Swansea City AFC at Liberty Stadium: they're in the Premier League so you should see some top teams taking them on. More into rugby? The Ospreys, part of the RaboDirect Pro12, also play at Liberty Stadium, and international teams including Wales can be cheered on at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium about an hour away.
