  • Peaceful rural site a 15-minute walk from the village pub
  • Half an hour from the beaches of the south and west coasts
  • Firepit hire available on site, with wood and kindling to buy
Fancy a spot of rural relaxation a short walk from the village pub and with easy access to the famed Welsh castles and coastline? Then take a break at Y Bwthyn, a peaceful place surrounded by farmland and a 15-minute trot from the pub in Llandissilio. Energetic small fry (and accompanying canines) can romp about with impunity at this spacious site, and there’s plenty of stuff nearby to fuel holiday smiles too. Perhaps they’d like to play at being knights at Laugharne Castle, build sandcastles on Saundersfoot beach or have a go on the heart-thumping rides at Oakwood? All are within a half-hour drive. Guests are welcome to set up their own barbecue or campfire for warm alfresco soirées (sensible locations away from the pitches only please, peeps) and individual firepits, wood and kindling are available to request on arrival for an extra charge. All the basics are provided for a comfy stay: the toilet and shower block is sited on the accommodation field, and has separate facilities for ladies and gents.

10-amp electric grass pitch

Liked: Size of the field (we dislike big campsites), Nigel and Erica were very friendly, approachable and checked in throughout our visit, good sized pitches, electric hook up, great location as around 30 mins from all coastal towns in Pembrokeshire, good location for walks, dog friendly, clean toilet/shower block

10-amp electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic customer service, felt very welcome on arrival and owners took the time each day to check on all guests to make sure all okay, all facilities, parking etc. were clearly highlighted to us on arrival making it a pleasant and simple setup. Small play area for the kids. Toilets and washing up facilities very clean and modern, clearly well attended to.

Disliked: No hand driers in toilets, didn’t bother me so much but our 6 year old son was very opinionated on the matter! 🤣

From the manager: Many thanks for this fantastic review. We're really pleased that you enjoyed yourselves. Hope that you can visit again soon. Please let your son know that we will consider the hand drying facilities!

Derwen camping pod

Liked: My recent night stay in a glamping pod was nothing short of enchanting – a truly magical experience that seamlessly blended luxury and nature. Nestled in the heart of breathtaking scenery, this glamping site offered a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the charm of the glamping pod. The exterior design effortlessly blended into the natural surroundings, providing a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The interior, however, was where the magic truly unfolded. The pod was not only spacious but also tastefully decorated with a keen eye for detail. The comfortable bed, adorned with plush bedding, promised a restful night's sleep. One of the standout features of this glamping experience was the seamless integration of modern amenities. Despite being surrounded by nature, the pod was equipped with all the comforts of a luxury accommodation. The thoughtful inclusion of a private bathroom and a well-equipped kitchenette ensured that I had everything I needed for a comfortable stay.

Disliked: However, it's important to note that the pitch fees, while understandable in their seasonal variations, seemed a bit on the higher side for the time of my visit. A more transparent breakdown of the fees, perhaps with a seasonal rate chart, would have been appreciated during the booking process. This could help manage expectations and allow guests to plan accordingly. Another aspect that could be improved is the maintenance of the outdoor space. While the glamping pod itself was well-kept, the surrounding area, including the fire pit, could use a bit more attention. This would enhance the overall experience, especially for guests looking forward to enjoying the outdoor amenities. The staff's courtesy and hospitality were commendable, and I must express my appreciation for their efforts. However, a bit more proactive communication about the seasonal variations in pitch fees and perhaps some recommendations for on-site activities during different times of the year would be valuable information for guests.

From the manager: Many thanks for your very full and detailed review. We're really pleased that you enjoyed your stay in the log pod, especially considering the very wet December weather. Regarding your comment on the seasonal prices - there are none. We keep our prices as low as possible, at the same price throughout the year. Also, we can not cut the grass when it is as wet as it has been sorry. We would love for you return in the Summer when it resembles a bowling green. Not sure what you thought was a fire pit as we store them indoors throughout Winter. Hope you had a safe journey back, and thanks again for staying with us.

Local attractions

Half an hour’s drive takes you down to the beaches of the south coast, including the sandy stretches at Saundersfoot and Tenby, from where you can also take a boat trip out of the harbour to try your luck spotting the local seals. Active types can pick up the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Tenby to take a ramble along part of its 186-mile length in search of cliffs, coves and castles; a popular stretch is the eight-mile section from Tenby to Manorbier Castle. Those who’d rather take to the sea can hire motorboats, kayaks and jetskis in Tenby, or have a go at waterskiing or wakeboarding. Surfing types can head west to Newgale, just over half an hour away and a well known fave for boarders. There’s always a castle nearby in this part of Wales, and at Y Bwthyn your nearest examples are Picton Castle, 20 minutes away, and Laugharne Castle, half an hour’s drive away. Picton looks like a classic castle from the outside, but has been restored inside as a smart stately home – a rather fab mash-up of styles. Leave time to walk through the woods and visit the Secret Owl Garden, too. Laugharne, in contrast, is an atmospheric ruin that overlooks the Taf estuary and provides some imagination-firing glimpses into 12th-century life. Oakwood Theme Park and the Blue Lagoon waterpark are both around a 20-minute drive away.
