  • Spectacularly scenic seaside site with views across Newport Parrog
  • Pony trekking, crabbing, theme parks and zoos all within easy reach
  • Bordered by the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; near a coastal bus service
Family-run by the same dedicated bloodline since it opened in the early 1920s, Morawelon Camping and Caravanning is set between the Mynydd Carningli and some utterly spectacular sea views across the vast Newport Parrog beach (oft aptly referred to as Traeth Mawr, or ‘big beach’). Also very handily for hikers, the site is separated from the seaside only by the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, making sunset coastal strolls (or sunrise, if you’re an early sort) a cinch from the site. There’s no adventure playground or entertainment here – instead the site has kept things blissfully simple by providing heaps of space among which grownups and kids can make their own fun. However, should anyone in your party fancy activity in the way of a pootle around the estuary, canoes (and accompanying life jackets) can be borrowed from the site in return for a small donation to a local charity or the RNLI: how very lovely. Morawelon Camping and Caravanning’s scenic waterfront bar and restaurant is where to head should you require anything of a foodie or boozy nature: tea, coffee, soft-whip ice cream and cakes are served as snacky options, while other diners placed elsewhere on the hunger scale can choose to scoff anything from light savoury snacks and fish and chips to dishes from a tasty à la carte menu. When the weather’s clement, a fine big south-facing patio provides an utterly smashing vista towards Carningli. If instead you’ve chosen to barbecue your alfresco eats at your pitch, you can comfortably cleanse your pots and pans over at the covered washing-up area, which has been handily kitted out with sinks, washing-up basins, draining racks and a hot and cold water supply. Handily, taps supplying fresh drinking water are also in each accommodation area should you require a quick rinse or an immediate tipple to hydrate. Other spotlessly maintained amenities include a chemical waste disposal unit, three toilets, urinals and two showers for gents, plus separate ladies’ sanitary facilities consisting of three toilets, two showers and a hairdryer for keeping your barnet in the style to which you’re accustomed. Showers run on a token meter, but if all you need to do is rid the day’s sand from betwixt your toes, then a handy free outdoor rinse-off shower should take care of that no problemo. The site warmly welcomes pet pooches, but the owners politely request that they’re kept on a lead at all times so as not to unwittingly unsettle the herds of sheep that call the neighbouring fields home.

Local attractions

All manner and means of outdoorsy pursuits are within your holiday grasp at this cracking coastal site: pop atop a pony for a scenic trek along the beach, or instead hop into a boat for an equally scenic sea fishing or sailing trip. Back on land, lace up your hiking boots for ambles of all sorts around the Preseli Hills or along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which runs right alongside the site; if you’d like to try a different section of coast path one day, you can catch the coastal bus service that runs direct from the adjacent car park to make the very most of your time exploring the coastline. If you’re with littles who haven’t yet learned the virtues of a brisk coastal walk or hillside hike, then paintballing, go-karting, archery and crazy golf are more local activities they might otherwise enjoy, all doable at Heatherton World of Activities. Elsewhere, other attractions aimed at amusing little brains include Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo and the family-friendly rides of Oakwood Theme Park; when you’ve done your day’s duty of keeping the kids happy, you can carefreely head down the road for a top-notch pint at the locally loved Bessie's Dyffryn Arms.
