  • Peaceful site on a working farm five minutes from Pembroke
  • Nearest beach 10 minutes' drive away; Tenby within 15 minutes
  • Plenty of space, barbecues allowed, and stabling provided for horses
If you hanker after peace, quiet, space and a simple rural vibe, you’ll find all these in spades at Alleston Farm Camping... this 14-acre site is set back from the road in the grounds of a working farm. The owners stress that guests shouldn't come to this site looking for anything more than peace and quiet on a country farm: this isn't a busy tourist site, more a quiet space with basic but clean facilities, where you can soak up the countryside and put up your tent. You may well get the impression that you’re bang in the middle of nowhere here; in fact a major bonus of this site is that it’s only a few minutes outside central Pembroke. It's also just 15 minutes or so from the ferry terminal at Pembroke Dock, making this a handy staging post if you’re enroute to or from Ireland. Arrive on or with a horse and they can overnight in a comfy stable or field ready to accompany you on the rural trails around the area. A light, roomy toilet block has free showers and there’s also a basic sink area that provides drinking water and a place to wash up. There’s no electricity on site, so don’t forget to bring a torch for any late-night wanderings; if it’s a clear night turn it off later and look upwards at the starry display overhead. Barbecues are allowed and a farm shop is 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Pembrokeshire is famed for its beaches and there are several to pick from within easy reach. Freshwater East, flanked by a woodland nature reserve, is the closest at a 10-minute drive or a 40-minute walk away, and Freshwater West 20 minutes’ drive away has been used as a location for various films including Harry Potter. Fab Barafundle Bay, a frequent entrant on best-beach charts, is about 15 minutes away. Castles are another feature of this part of the world: start off at Pembroke Castle on the town's riverbank. A little further afield, the ruins of Carew Castle or the seafront Manorbier Castle are 15 minutes away. If you’ve got kids in tow, recommended days out nearby include Heatherton World of Activities, 15 minutes from the farm; Folly Farm (20 minutes); Oakwood (25 minutes) and Shearwater (30 minutes), to board a wildlife safari to head out to sea to spot whales, dolphins, seals and puffins.
