  • Peaceful site next to the River Taf in rural Pembrokeshire
  • Close to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the Preseli Hills
  • Woodland walks, small farm park and modern heated amenities block
Pembrokeshire’s perhaps most famed for its stunning coastline – that’s the feature that gave it the country’s only coastal national park, after all… Inland’s definitely worth a bit of exploration too though, especially if you’ve bagged a spot at Wellstone Country Camping. A stay here is a proper rural escape – this peaceful south Wales site between Tegryn and Llanfyrnach is on the banks of the River Taf, with woodland and riverside walks around the grounds and corners where those with the appropriate licence can dangle a rod in the waters. Guests can go wild swimming in either the River Taf or local Wellstone Lake. Kites and kingfishers are among the natural residents you may spot as you wander around the place, and there’s a little farm park where you can hang out with furry friends including rabbits, goats and chickens. This is a wifi-free site, so you’ll need to step away from the gadgets and find more traditional entertainment. Free-roaming kids and dogs (and grownups too, of course) have plenty of space for games, barbecues and campfires, and there are heaps of family-friendly days out nearby (beaches, horse riding, theme parks, a waterpark – the list goes on…) Facilities on site are fairly basic but well kept, including a modern and heated toilet and shower block, and a washing-up area. A couple of pubs are within a few minutes’ drive if you fancy having dinner cooked for you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was very quiet with space for around a dozen family sized tents. We were one of only two tents there on our first night. The small shower/toilet block was very clean and well looked after. Free fire pits were available with access to firewood and an honesty box for payment at £4 per bag.

Disliked: The site was very uneven and sloped down towards the stream. When we arrived the grass was very long and wet although it was mown on our second day (around our tent obviously). The site is very rural so you may have to travel out to get a phone signal and would not be suitable for any drivers uncomfortable with travelling down single track roads.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Gorgeous little secluded area with lovely creek running by the site - very picturesque. Toilet facilities were very clean and in good condition and the little washing up shed also came with a fridge and a kettle - a nice bonus! Loved the fact there was pre chopped wood available (£4 a bag, enough to last us our two nights) and fire pits to borrow. Much more intimate and peaceful than other campsites I’ve seen around.

Badger yurt

Liked: Everything about the yurt - it was clean and exceptionally well equipped. The toilets and showers were clean and well maintained and Dan and Les our ‘hosts’ were welcoming, available but unobtrusive. Perfect position and everything about the location was brilliant.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

Between the site and the coast (about a 15-minute drive) are the Preseli Hills, a fab area for a walk, mountain bike ride or a horse/pony trek organised by one of the local stables. It’s also an intriguing area on a historic front, for there are many ancient spots around the area: Castell Henllys Iron Age site and the Pentre Ifan Bronze Age burial chamber are both about 25 minutes away. If you do fancy heading for the coast, there are splendid beaches in all directions – head north to Newport Sands or south to Pendine, both about half an hour away. For coastal activities, take a long walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path or head to Cardigan (25 minutes) for coasteering, kayaking, rafting and the like. The town's Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park is worth a look for sightings of seals and dolphins. This is a fab area for family-oriented days out too: Oakwood Theme Park, Blue Lagoon waterpark and Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo are all within a 40-minute drive.
