  • Quiet and well-maintained retreat on farmland in a wildlife haven
  • A 10-minute drive to Llandysul and 25 minutes to Llangrannog beach
  • Free-range eggs, homemade jam on arrival; watersports in local village
‘Wow’ is one word that springs to mind when perusing pics of this scenic site in west Wales’ Teifi valley among open fields with farm animals and wildlife all around. Another couple is ‘yes please’ when you find out it’s in a lush salmon and trout fishing area with free-range eggs and homemade jam handed out to you on arrival... Perhaps even more appealing is that watersports are in the local village of Llandysul – think canoeing and kayaking on the River Teifi – and, being in Ceredigion, the region is top for walking and cycling (Sustrans Route 82 goes by Llandysul for biking). It’s also a short journey to the many, many beaches on the Cardigan Bay coastline, like Llangrannog’s sandy shore a 25-minute drive, which you can wander along with a chance of spotting the famed dolphins (and maybe even a minke whale if luck’s on your side...). The wildlife elsewhere in the region’s spectacular as well, including around the park where you can wake up to the calls of red kites and buzzards and spy badgers, foxes and owls in the evenings. Light pollution’s non-existent, so bring your camera for snaps of the Milky Way on cloudless nights. Other activities in the local area include seeing steam railways, shopping in independently minded towns and having boozy pub lunches in authentic inns – leaflets on site will help you sort out stuff to do.

Local attractions

If finding out about the history of Welsh farming piques your interest, the National Wool Museum has displays explaining all about the Welsh woollen industry and is 10 minutes' drive from the site. Visiting 900-year-old Cardigan Castle (half an hour’s drive) is another way to learn about the local area – as well as catch up on contemporary culture as it’s often used as a concert venue – or you can go underground and further back in time at the Roman-era Dolaucothi Gold Mines (40 minutes away). Chug along to another example of Wales’ industrial heritage at the antique Gwili Steam Railway (30 minutes) or whisk yourself towards the Welsh Wildlife Centre and the Teifi Marshes (40 minutes) for birdwatching species like kingfishers and tawny owls from specially set up observation hides. The National Botanic Garden of Wales also gets you right into nature (45 minutes away) but without needing to watch the weather thanks to having the world’s biggest single-span glasshouse...
