  • Family run for over 40 years, two miles from the beach at New Quay
  • Fishing lake surrounded by acres of peaceful space
  • Pool, play areas, arcade, kids' club and clubhouse with two bars
Want to pitch up in splendid New Quay on the Ceredigion coast, former home of Dylan Thomas and 20 minutes’ drive from rubbernecking at the bottlenose dolphins of Cardigan Bay? Pitch up at Pencnwc Holiday Park. It’s less than two miles from New Quay’s safe beaches and harbour walls, five miles from the sands at Ceredigion and 20 from the university town of Aberystwyth; Cardigan is the same distance to the south. The site has been family-run for over 40 years so it knows what’s what in making sure it has a stonking amount to do on site for guests of all sizes and inclinations. After your warm Welsh welcome at reception, let the small sorts roam: they can take their pick from two on-site play areas, an amusingly big amusement arcade, splashing around in the heated indoor pool with adjacent paddling pool, or getting crafty making art, jewellery, sport and games at the free kids’ club. The entertainment runs into the evening in Merlyn’s Den, one of the two bars in the clubhouse, and is suitable for all sizes. Seeking a slightly more sedate or grownup time? Hide yourself away in Pencnwc’s second pub, Smugglers Bar, for a coffee, newspaper or catching up with what’s happening in the world of sport on the bar’s numerous tellies; fish and chips, pies and other seaside snacks available from the Smugglers takeaway can be taken into the entertainment bar and the Smugglers bar serves sit-down meals. Or take munchies to the on-site fishing lake, where acres of space abound for quiet contemplation (and no-one nicking your chips). Small sorts probably won’t be too fussed about the on-site facilities, but grownups should be chuffed with the amenities on offer including loo and shower blocks with free hot water, a modern launderette and a washing-up area all kept in spankingly good order among the flowers, shrubbery and well-maintained grounds. There’s no food shop on site, but you’ll find two at the nearby village of Cross Inn, a few minutes’ walk away.

Liked: Site about was great , toilet block, club house, swimming pool all easy walking distance. Enjoyed the bingo and entertainment in the club.

Disliked: The small gravel on the pitch was a pain had loads in our caravan from our shoes . The chips in the club house were awful would not order again, though the bbq cheese chicken breast was delicious.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Stopped for 2 nights. The site is clean and well presented. Great spot to use as a base to get to the coast or local sites with the kids. Nice tarmac pitches and roads made using scooters fun.

Disliked: Lots of children unsupervised in the games area of the bar/clubhouse and also the site in general. At night, children were cycling around in the dark with no lights on their bikes. This isn't necessarily the sites fault but it was quite worrying.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Lovely well run site. Facilities good and clean. Local village, within 2 minutes, walking distance. Good pub and shop. Free shuttle minibus to Newquay.

Disliked: We chose this site because it was dod friendly and had a clubhouse. Sadly dogs were not allowed in the clubhouse. The enclosed dog walking area was water logged. My dog was covered in mud, I know we have had a lot of rain. Just sharing info with other dog owners. WiFi available in the clubhouse only. Luckily the pub was dog friendly.

Liked: Big site like a franchise park but had a family run feel to it. As if the owners actually have pride in the site. We really enjoyed it and so did the kids.

Disliked: Extra charges for things like the pool.

Local attractions

The traditional fishing village of New Quay, two miles away, is, of course, a fine place for fishing – such boat trips bob out from the harbour here, as do dolphin-spotting outings. There's a fine population of the marine mammals nearby but for a cast-iron guarantee of wildlife sightings you may like to drop in at the town's Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre. The market town of Cardigan (a hub for active pursuits) and the university town of Aberystwyth are both 20 miles away. Top local beaches are at Aberaeron (15 minutes' drive), and Llangrannog (20 minutes).
