  • Isolated site in a wild location in the Cambrian mountains
  • Walks and bike rides of all levels all around the area
  • Indoor showers, toilets, kitchen and common room with wood stove
Walking and cycling, obvs. And spectacular scenery… such are the main draws of Ceredigion's Dolgoch Bunkhouse, an isolated site in splendid remote setting in the Cambrian mountains. An extensive network of trails crisscrosses this land, of varying lengths for different levels of ability and all among viewsome and peaceful countryside. Several start straight from the site, and maps are available for guests. (And do look up for red kites overhead along your way…) Dolgoch is a mile down a track off the road between Tregaron and Llanwrtyd Wells, about 20 miles from the abseiling, caving and heaps more hiking of the Brecon Beacons and 10 from the nearest pubs or shops. All guests share the communal facilities of the bunkhouse, which include a kitchen, showers, toilets and a common room with woodburning stove. There's no electricity (and therefore no fridge or wifi) but there is some LED lighting. Because of the nature of the bunkhouse, there are no dogs allowed anywhere on site. Water is heated by solar panels: please note that during the winter the water supply is limited to avoid burst pipes.

1 bedroom bunkhouse (four person)

Liked: Jim the warden welcomed us into the cosy main room with a roaring fire after we'd been out in the rain for hours! The bunkhouse is in a beautiful, very remote, location. The accommodation is wonderfully basic - no mains electricity, signal or wifi! But the rooms were clean and comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed.

Disliked: Nothing!

Spacious and clean. Great for those who don't mind being off grid.

1 bedroom bunkhouse (four person)

Liked: The Hostel is totally off grid. No Electricity, phone signal or internet. Lots of indoor relaxing space with a very effective wood fire. (We stayed when the temperatures were just above freezing). There is a rack to dry wet clothes above the wood burner. Bedrooms have no lights so bring a good torch. Outside has lots of seating and in summer would be a great space to sit out in. Bedrooms were clean, laundry was freshly laundered. I'm 190 cm and found my bunk was a little short, but bearable, and the duvet was large and warm.

1 bedroom bunkhouse (six person)

Liked: Lovely peaceful place, well kept and clean. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, amazing, plenty to see and do. Plenty of soap in toilets and showers and kitchen. Nice kitchen with plenty of kitchen wears to use, and a good seating area inside with games and books and a seating area outside. There was a useful sink in our room too. The wardens were very kind and helpful, they welcomed us and gave us good advice about where to visit. Our children were all excited about staying in a hostel, even with no wifi and having to use torches at night. The stars at night were spectacular. We would recommend this place.

Disliked: The only inconvenient part of our stay was having no wifi or signal, but we still enjoyed ourselves anyway.

Local attractions

Whatever your level of fitness/laziness, you'll find a walk around here to suit. Pick up a map from the bunkhouse and set off on your scenic way, such as around the Towy valley four miles away; along the Elan Valley Trail; to the most remote church in Wales at Soar-y-mynydd, or up the highest peak in mid-Wales at cairn-topped Drygarn Fawr. At the end of the bunkhouse drive, a path goes up to a mountain bothy and on to the monks' path to Strata Florida Abbey. Quiet roads and plenty of tracks and bridleways are around for cycling too: the Lôn Las Cymru national cycle route passes nearby, as does the Ystwyth Trail which runs along the old railway line from Tregaron to Aberystwyth. Bike four further miles from the Towy valley to reach the 23-mile circuit around Llyn Brianne reservoir, or go mountain biking around the isolated Doethie valley before a pitstop at the popular Abergwesyn café. Buses run every couple of hours from the nearest town Tregaron to Aberystwyth in one direction and Llanwrtyd Wells in the other. Riding centres are at the latter, to arrange day treks on horseback for all levels from beginners to experienced. There's plenty more to pick from in the area as well as all this, such seeing the birds at the Red Kite Feeding Station and rehabilitation centre of Gigrin Farm, about half an hour away; watersports and caving at the Brecon Beacons National Park, or fishing for brown trout at Brenig river, running nearby through Tregaron.
