  • Set in rural Wales with spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons
  • A 15-minute drive from outdoor activity centres in Brecon
  • Horse riding centre, farm park, shows, workshops, café and indoor play
Farmyard fun is the firm order of the day at Cantref Campsite, a family-friendly place three miles from Brecon town centre and surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Stay here and you’ll not just get to meet the friendly animals: you can also trot next door to the kids’ farm park to get hands on. Shows and workshops run every half-hour throughout the the day, with antics including pet handling, bottle feeding lambs, tractor and trailer rides and madcap pig races. (Bargain hunters, take note: families staying at Cantref get two days' farm park entry for the price of one). Got a particular soft spot for the horses? You’re in the right place – the site’s also got a horse riding and pony trekking centre, catering for all abilities from baffled beginner to experienced horse handlers. Now, it does occasionally rain in Wales, so the clever farm folk have installed a pleasingly spacious and heated indoor play area at the farm park in case the outdoor rides are too damp. For eats, Cantref Campsite's farmhouse café serves light lunchtime snacks, cakes and homemade specials and there are a couple of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Stunning view, great pitch sizes, friendly staff.

Disliked: Screaming and shouting kids, loud music from other tents after 11pm every night. Other campsites does not allow loud noise after 10 or 11pm. We wanted to chill after our hikes but it was impossible because of the noise and noone did anything. Not enough toilets and showers. There was more toilets on the back but they were closed. Only 2 for ladies and 1 for man this is absolutely not enough when the Adventure Farm customers are using it as well. The light in the shower facility switched off in every few minutes so we ended up to have a shower in the dark because the sensore doesn't see people behind the doors.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I had requested a pitch on the lower level but when I arrived was booked on upper level. This was changed without any issue. The Black Mountain pitches( lower level) are bigger, more level and generally quieter. Views are fantastic , can see Pen Y Fan from site. Easy access to water points/ electric hook up . Toilets, showers, washing up facilities are a bit of a hike up a hill but clean( apart from other users not mopping up after themselves- annoying). The new individual shower/ toilets are a plus and showers are powerful and hot.Like that they are closed during day so day visitors can't use. Staff are very friendly, helpful and remembered me and my cockapoo from stay a year ago which was nice.Big field to take dog plus a short walk to the river. Good base for walking. Drove no more than 15- 30mins for my daily hikes.

Disliked: The path to the toilet/ showers is unlit at night . Understand this is due to environmental regulations.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice little site. Great free entry to the farm on all days staying. Saturday evening bar/pizza and soft play for the kids. Lovely to hear the sounds of animals as we woke up. Great views and sound of the river nearby. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Toilet/shower block was a bit tired, up a steep hill from the camping area and didn't feel particularly private (door always propped open). Pitches on upper field appeared very close together, looked a bit cramped, but lower field was more spacious.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely fantastic campsite. So much for the children to do I wish we'd stayed longer. All of the staff and wardens were incredibly helpful and accommodating. 2 big play areas for the kids, both inside and outside was such a great addition. We also added on a horse ride which was fantastic.

Local attractions

Views out over the surrounding mountains and valleys will no doubt tip you off that there are plenty of options for mountain biking and hill walking nearby. Several biking and hiking routes start near the site, with heaps more around the rest of the Brecon Beacons National Park (including five mountain bike centres and 14 trails ranging from beginner to expert). If you’re up for other outdoorsy activities, activity centres in Brecon (15 minutes’ drive) can hook you up with days of canoeing, caving, climbing and sailing. For a real challenge, get set to scale Pen y Fan – south Wales’s highest peak is 20 minutes away (handily, the easiest route up is also the most convenient here – no need to let on to the folk back home.) For something a little gentler, take your binoculars to Craig Cerrig-Gleisiad or Talybont Reservoir (both about 20 minutes) for some excellent birdwatching, or crack on to Crickhowell Castle (25 minutes).
