  • Small family-run farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Miles of hill, countryside and mountain walks all around
  • Just outside the village of Felindre
Hay you! Up for a wander in the Brecon Beacons? Fancy hoofing it around Hay Forest, heading off to Offa’s Dyke, traversing the Taff Trail – and staying with friendly folk on a farm with views and sunsets that'll make your eyes water? Walk this way… Newcourt Farm Campsite is the place to peel off your socks pitchside once you’re on your last legs: this small family-run farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Brecon Beacons National Park is used by wise wayfarers as a base for hiking the hills, mountains and countryside all around. Gliding, horse riding, fishing, golf and watersports are also available nearby; if you’re too puffed out to even think about any of that, this is a stellar spot for stargazing too. The farm has clean showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Supervised school trips and groups such as Duke of Edinburgh Award seekers are welcome, and the site is dog-friendly. For fuel, Newcourt Farm Campsite is just outside the village of Felindre, to pick up pub grub at the dog- and child-friendly Three Horseshoes pub.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great friendly welcome Great views

Disliked: Couldn't get a flat pitch, only area relatively flat had grass that was long (over our toddlers knees). So we were constantly soaked from morning dew, toddler kept falling into it so wasn't really able to play

Liked: Excellent location and very warmly welcomed by Bob and his lovely wife. We were in an old motorhome but with all necessary washing/loo requirements. Plenty of space, good basic facilities especially if one is camping, and the views are astounding! Would highly recommend and will definitely stay there again to explore the many and varied walks on offer.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A budget friendly, no frills, get what you pay for sight. Fabulous views over the hills. Nice and rural with no road noise. NO EHU so friendly owner offers a facility to charge your phone for a £1.

Disliked: Not very flat…There are a few fields to choose from however the largest are on a fairly steep incline. Absolutely fine if you use your levellers. Lovely walks but no pub that we could find close by. 50 p for a shower that only accepts 1 coin at a time so you have to leave your cubicle to top it up if you need too. We managed though.

Local attractions

Your boots will be made for walking: this corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park has footpaths and trails all around to warm you up before tackling the hill walks and mountains, and all in a spectacular part of Wales made up of valleys, waterfalls, caves and open countryside. There are a couple of walks direct from Newcourt and two long-distance trails cross through the farm: the Offa’s Dyke Path on the eastern border of the national park and the Taff Trail running south from Brecon. The Brecon Beacons Park Society has a full programme of guided walks in the park from moderate to strenuous, and there are lots of routes and maps available from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (or just ask Newcourt Farm owner David to point you in the right direction). The national park’s also where you can get your fill of climbing, birdwatching, caving, canoeing, sailing and other outdoor options; a visitor centre six miles from Brecon has all the info you might need as well as courses and events like pottery workshops and navigation training. Also around are several Sustrans routes for cyclists as well cycle hire and cycle tour guide companies; mountain bikers have five mountain bike centres and 14 trails from yellow (level one) to ‘killer black’ (bring plasters). Wheels on tour can cycle the Lôn Las Cymru, the route from Cardiff to Holyhead via Brecon (use route 42). After all that, you hereby have permission to curl up with a book: buy your tomes at the town of books, Hay-on-Wye, about half an hour from Brecon.
