  • Luxury glamping in a spectacularly scenic spot in the Welsh hills
  • Stunning mountain views 10 minutes' drive from Hay-on-Wye
  • Firepit, picnic table, library, kitchen and proper beds in each unit
Glamping with Black Mountain views, and a pub within a minute’s lurch…well, Wye wouldn’t you. The team at Wye Glamping have the laudable ambition of bringing guests close to nature but immersing them in comfort and style too, so even reluctant campers/other halves should be mightily impressed with the luxury bell tents and yurt here, all with proper beds, kitchen hut of their very own and on wooden platforms in their own private camps. Each also has a compost toilet, the stream running alongside, a firepit, picnic table and deckchairs, and a little individual library of books, toys and games for rainy days…again, Wye wouldn’t you? For supplies, the site is on the edge of Velindre village and pub (there are a couple of small play parks here too); a petrol station selling basics is in the nearby village of Three Cocks, and shops are in Hay-on-Wye under 10 minutes' drive away. Fancy some boutique shopping to go with the sense of luxury? The market town of Brecon is 10 miles away.

Route directions

Once you reach Velindre: The Entrance to our property is opposite the Three Horseshoes Pub, next to the play park. The entrance is wide and surrounded by a wooden fence. Drive over the cattle grid and follow the private road around to the right, and you’ll then see a big green agricultural shed on your left. Turn left just before the shed, and this will take you into our car park. If no one is there to greet you, please ring Diane on 07974000421 The yurt and bell tent are a short walk from here along a gravel path. There will be a trolley to transport your bags to the camp.

Local attractions

Take to the paths of the Brecon Beacons National Park and beyond for miles of scenic hikes and hooking up with long distance paths. The Taff Trail goes south from Brecon for 55 miles along the River Taff to Cardiff Bay; the oft-walked Offa’s Dyke Path skirts the eastern side of the national park; and the Beacons Way runs for a full hundred miles across the park. Probably you should not attempt all three on your very first Big Wales Walking Trip. The Brecon Beacons National Park is also where you can lie back and stargaze: it’s a designated Dark Sky Reserve and the Milky Way is visible from here on clear nights. Elsewhere the park has cycle routes, climbing, caving, watersports, over a dozen mountain bike trails, and five mountain bike centres; there are shops and galleries at Abergavenny, and Crickhowell as well as Brecon if the thought of all this outdoor activity is making you feel a bit faint. You’ll find bucketloads of things to do in wet weather too: the award-winning soft play centre Play Barn at nearby Brynach; Brecon’s indoor pool and ten-pin bowling; Brecon Cathedral and the indoor options including climbing, rope bridges and ‘caving’ at the award-winning Llangorse Multi Activity Centre.
