'Absolute perfection' is how one happy guest described their stay at absolutely ffab and award-winning Fforest Fields Caravan and Camping Park in Powys – and after having a look at what's on offer (time to peruse the site pics), you're ffery likely to agree. There's loads on offer at this peaceful park in the mid-Wales hills: large pitches, spectacular views, a friendly atmosphere for adults, kids and dogs... and a dedicated approach to conservation and wildlife that sees many areas left natural as homes for birds and small mammals in the hedgerows, wild banks and stream verges. A stream runs through the 10-acre site, leading to several wildlife ponds for kids to look for newts and tadpoles. Fforest Fields is four miles from the old market town of Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh Showground in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The pitching area is in the middle of the family farm, with well-maintained facilities including free hot showers heated with a biomass boiler. Barbecues and campfires are allowed as long as they're kept off the ground in a suitable container (blocks are available to protect the grass if you need them). Also on site is a small shop selling essentials like milk and bread, fresh orange, yoghurts, eggs, Bujok bacon and home-produced sausages and pork burgers, and a small café, serving simple but tasty food and coffee. Dogs are also very welcome (on leads while on site, please) and there are lots of walks directly from the site as well as plenty of areas where they can be let off the lead and swim in local lakes.

Route directions

Once you are on the A481 please follow the signs and do not turn off the main road if coming from New Radnor and Kington on the A44. If coming from the north, via Newtown, we strongly recommend ignoring the satnav and taking the A489 then the A470 via Llanidloes and Rhayader to Builth Wells (not via Llandrindod Wells). Once you are on the A470, the satnav should be reset. The nearest train stations are: Builth Road - Heart of Wales line - 5 miles Llandrindod Wells - Heart of Wales line - 5 miles There are no public buses from or to the campsite.

Local attractions

The Fforest Fields Caravan and Camping Park team encourages guests to explore the terrain of the campsite, from taking a picnic and sitting on the hill watching wild ponies to trekking for food and draught beers at the Seven Stars Inn on the hill's other side. Two lakes for swimming and fishing are near Fforest Fields, as well as dozens of walks through the forest: take to the top of the hill to see thousands of acres of moorland below, with spectacular views towards the Brecon Beacons. If it's nature and scenery you're after, try the Elan valley near the site; for history, Norman castles are scattered around and the site of a small keep is hidden in the Fforest Fields woods. Activity enthusiasts have watersports, biking and climbing in this area, the nearby Brecon Beacons and in the ancient Cambrian Mountains towards more of the same at Aberystwyth. Very close to home are two play centres and a small breeds centre for active kids. Many first-rate market towns are nearby, like bookish Hay-on-Wye, Prestigne, Brecon and the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells. The Royal Welsh Showground at Llanelwedd near Builth Wells is four miles away and hosts events on its showground throughout the year including the Royal Welsh Show in July.
