  • Quiet site with river, meadow and woodland views
  • Within 40 minutes' drive of outdoor activities in the Elan valley
  • Over a mile of private fishing for trout, salmon, sewin and grayling
Fishing fan? As the name suggests, Irfon River Caravan and Camping Park is right on the banks of the River Irfon, and stays on this family-friendly site in mid Wales come with access to a mile and a quarter of private fishing rights. Trout, salmon, sewin and grayling are splashing in these waters, while there are further rich pickings on the nearby Usk and Wye rivers and in the reservoirs of the Elan Valley, a 40-minute drive away. It’s a pretty spot to park up in, with views of the river, meadows and woodlands, the Epynt mountains and the Brecon Beacons beyond. Despite its deep country setting, the site is under five minutes’ drive from the village and railway station of Garth and 10 minutes from Builth Wells, whose showground hosts the annual Royal Welsh Show and something crowd pulling pretty much every other weekend of the year as well. If you’ve been fortunate fishing the Irfon, caught some whoppers on the Wye or landed unbelievable quantities on the Usk, an outdoor feast awaits, and barbecues are welcome on site.

Liked: Beautiful area around the park with the river irfon being particularly stunning. We fished all day and although did not catch it was very early in the year and I think we may have spotted a salmon. Local pub the Prince Llewelyn, had excellent food. The ladies at the site were very friendly. Overall 10/10

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The elevated position of the pitches separated away from the statics. The pitches themselves were generous in size and each had their own water supply and drainage point for grey water. The showers and toilets (only for use by tourers) were kept spotlessly clean and were positively luxurious by some site standards with spacious individual wet rooms. Andrew was friendly, helpful and very professional. I'm sure that the impression he gave that nothing was too much trouble was a very genuine one. He and his team certainly kept the site in good order; it was an extremely attractive site.

Local attractions

The Elan valley – an area of hills, rivers and lakes known as the Welsh Lake District – is half an hour’s drive away for hikes and angling, mountain biking and birdwatching. For further action on the feathered front, it’s a similar distance to the Red Kite Feeding Station just outside Rhayader, where an array of raptors lay on daily displays for their dinner. For a quick intro to the Brecon Beacons, make for the Pwll y Wrach National Nature Reserve, 40 minutes away: trails take you through ancient woodlands, looking out for badgers, otters, chiffchaffs and pied flycatchers before finishing with a deep, dark, thundering waterfall whose Welsh name means ‘the witches’ pool’. If you’re after bigger hikes high up, trails up Epynt mountain start five minutes’ drive away, and it’s around 50 minutes to routes up Pen y Fan and Waun Fach. Alternatively, let the water do all the hard work: canoe down the Wye from Three Cocks or down the Usk from Talybont, half an hour and 40 minutes away. If more into reading than boating, make a 40-minute foray to Hay-on-Wye, a town almost collapsing under the weight of all its secondhand bookshops, with many cosy pubs for you to peruse your purchases in over a pint.
