  • Quiet and simple farm site near the River Wye
  • Half an hour's drive from fishing, steam railway and Elan Valley
  • Pub and grub, shops and river walks within a 10-minute drive
Fishing, sailing and steam train rides, river walks and forest quests, after a stay on this quiet hilltop farm in Powys, you’ll see why they say West Wales has it all. Glangwy is a working farm near the River Wye, a mile from the village of Llangurig. On this hilly spot among the resident sheep and cows, with red kites circling overhead you’ll have ample space to take the air and plan your adventures. They keep things simple on the site; the washrooms have hot showers, dogs are welcome and you can park by your pitch. It’s a five-minute drive to the pub and hot grub in Llangurig. Llanidloes (10 minutes) has shops and supermarkets and a launderette if you’re planning a long stay. This handsome town on the Severn is a super place for river walks and also links up with Glyndwr’s Way, a 135-mile route taking you through the pastures and moors, forested lakes and reservoirs of this splendid country. If you've been intrigued by the calls of the red kites over the farm, head over to the feeding station at Rhayader (15 minutes); in the afternoons, a marvellous medley of buzzards, ravens and kites swoops and battles over the outdoor buffet.

Local attractions

The Elan Valley is half an hour's drive away; often called the Welsh Lake District, this stretch of reservoirs laced with hiking and biking trails is the meeting point of nature and human ingenuity, created by Victorian engineers to supply fresh water to Birmingham. Also half an hour away, the Hafren Forest is similarly managed for timber but teeming with wildlife and wonders. Take the Source of the Severn trail to see where the river really starts, or walk to the roaring majesty of Blaenhafren Falls. If you've acquired a taste for them, Devil's Bridge Falls (25 minutes) are even finer (and noisier) example of the kind, surrounded by walks through the deep gorge. If you're in need of a rest after all that, Devil's Bridge is the last (or first) station on the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway. The other end is Aberystwyth (40 minutes) and restored engines puff their way through the cracking stretch in between, all year round. Just for good measure, Aberystwyth has a cliff railway of its own, along with fine beaches for a paddle or a more energetic spot of windsurfing. Closer to the site, you can sail on Llyn Clywedog reservoir (25 minutes) and maybe catch a trout for your supper. No guarantees on that, but you're in for a grand time here.
