  • Well-maintained family-run park on the Tanat river
  • Kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and huge mountain bike park nearby
  • Fishing for trout and grayling right from the site
For a quiet rural hol on the banks of the River Tanat, pick yourself a pitch at Parc Farm Caravan Park, five minutes' stroll from Penybontfawr village on the road from Llanfyllin to Bala. You'll be close to heaps of active options around here, such as kayaking, windsurfing, boating, horse riding, abseiling, archery and game shooting at Lake Vyrnwy, and there's a huge mountain biking park three miles from base. This is a wonderfully well-maintained park in the Tanat Valley, with the river of the same name meandering right through the site and giving anglers the chance to haul themselves a few fine specimens of grayling or – if they're wily enough – trout to fry up on their evening barbecues. The play area and small football pitch over the river are splendid spots for a bit of running about well away from the accommodation area, which means that if you're a grownup indulging in a spot of R&R around your tourer, you're really not very likely to be disturbed by flying footballs or the like. A fine local pub and a shop for general groceries, newspapers and your morning milk can be found in the village of Penybontfawr, an easy five-minute stroll away. Nearby Llanfyllin and Llanrhaeadr both have a butchers shop, a chemist, cash machines and a couple of mini markets, so you've got most essentials sorted within very easy reach. You can also grab some grub at the pubs, hotels and restaurants around the area, many of which are kid- and dog-friendly.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The scenic views and river were amazing. Gorgeous place to stay. The owners were very friendly and give us a tow onto our pitch, due to heavy rainfall. We enjoyed minnow fishing in the river too.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Site, pitch, location, views and riverside location.

Disliked: WiFi - it was charged for but poor - very slow. We also thought it would be for a 24-hour period but it wouldn't let us back on in the morning. Perhaps it said that, but we may have missed it? So even though it was only a few pounds, it felt like a bit of a swizz.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Being so close to the river. The amazing views. Very clean toilet and shower block. And the lovely friendly owners. We loved it there and originally went for 3 nights but stayed an extra one. It's the first time that I have actually felt sad leaving a site. I really miss the views and can't wait to go back again. Thanks for a lovely long relaxing weekend 🙂

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

If fishing's your thing, you'll be particularly pleased to learn that you can fly fish for trout and grayling right from the park into the River Tanat which, handily, winds its way through the property. Parc Farm is also in a splendid spot for hill walking, gentle ambling, cycling, mountain biking, birdwatching, golfing or wandering around the area's bounty of historic sites – just ask your genial hosts for their recommendations, one of which will surely be Pistyll Rhaeadr – Britain's tallest single-drop waterfall and a rather dreamy departure point for yet more walking and cycling trails through the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains. Mountain bikers can head over to the bike track around three miles away, where rapid red, rocky black and steep pro trails network 120 acres of private woodland. For even more active days out, take your togs along to Lake Vyrnwy, around 20 minutes' drive away, for canoeing, kayaking, sailing and windsurfing. Next to the lake, the pumphouse, sculpture trail, dam and museum take visitors on a pleasant culture trip, while the series of trails that network the Dyfnant Forest also provide plenty of options for land-based activities; horseback hacks, carriage drives, long walks and leisurely bike rides are all popular in these parts, and abseiling and archery are available too. If you fancy trying your hand at clay and game shooting among a ginormous 24,000-acre estate, head over to the lake's local hotel. Walk or take a narrowboat trip over the UNESCO-listed Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – Britain's longest and highest aqueduct – or take a trip on Welshpool's narrow gauge heritage railway for 50-minute rides westwards to Llanfair Caereinion via Castle Caereinion.
