General
- On a working farm in the Welsh Marches with gorgeous views
- A 20-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; 40 minutes from Llandrindod Wells
- Pony trekking next door; half an hour hike from Offa's Dyke Path
Gorgeous views over the Welsh Marches, sheep and cows grazing in the fields next door and, crucially, limited phone signal freeing you from tech interruptions… the team at Powys Pods say that peaceful breaks are pretty much guaranteed at their working semi-organic farm 20 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye.
Concerned by the concept of being completely cut off from the outside world? Don’t tell the boss, but actually a wifi connection is available at the site’s facilities area for when you need to keep in contact.
Local info (walking maps, activity brochures and pub details) can also be consulted in more traditional form, as the folk in charge have gathered lots of it together in a folder for guests to peruse. Inside that folder are all sorts of ideas for days out nearby: horse riding (from the handy stables next door), golf, canoeing, city wanders and lots of country walk ideas.
A pub is 10 minutes’ drive away for times when you fancy having someone else do the dinner, but with all this space on site it’s highly recommended that you stock up on supplies (to stash in the fridge and freezer) and settle in for alfresco eats with a backdrop of valley views/spectacular sunsets/starry skies. A spacious covered kitchen has a hotplate, barbecue and prep area to aid in such endeavours, along with picnic tables and a firepit.
If the kids need some space to run about, it's handy to note that there's an enclosed lawn space that's overlooked by the kitchen and seating so parents can keep an eye on proceedings. Also handy on the family front are the self-contained washrooms with space to clean up mucky children.

Local attractions
Out to see more of that the splendid scenery… both novices and experienced rein-wranglers can sign up for horse riding/pony trekking from the riding centre on the next-door farm, while golfers play a round or two at Rhosgoch Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive) and paddlers launch canoes or kayaks on the River Wye from various spots within a half-hour drive.
Walkers will get great value out of their boots around here too: head straight out onto 7,000-acre Ireland Moor straight from the farm, take the half-hour hike to pick up the Offa’s Dyke Path, follow routes from Kington (25 minutes’ drive), tackle trails in the Black Mountains (half an hour)…
Ready for a rest? Take things a little more slowly by bimbling between bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes), seek out local tipples along the Hereford Cider Route (40 minutes) or meet cute creatures at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (half an hour). Brecon, Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells are all within a 40-minute drive for town wanders.
