  • In the Danube Recreational Zone, half an hour from central Vienna
  • Playground, beach volleyball and cycle hire
  • Next to the Danube Bike Path riverside cycle path
Dithering between the idea of a city break and a chilled country stay full of outdoor pursuits? Have yourself a generous slice of both at Camping Neue Donau in the Danube Recreational Zone, a swathe of green on the outskirts of Vienna. The mighty Danube river passes right by the site as it weaves its way through no fewer than ten countries, and the splendid open spaces of Danube Island lie directly opposite – hop over there in just a few minutes for beaches, swimming, playgrounds and loads of flat paths for easy walking, cycling and skating. More greenery beckons along the Danube Bike Path riverside cycle path, which passes handily between the site and the river to take you to the Danube-Auen National Park in 20 minutes or so (and on to Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade if you forget to turn around). Vienna itself is a mere half an hour away by bike or public transport – wander over to the metro station 10 minutes away and be whisked to the historic centre to stroll through the handsome streets, visit museums and refuel regularly with coffee and scrummy sachertorte at the city’s multitude of cafés. However you’re filling your day you can also fill your tummy before and after your outings with breakfasts and dinners at the site’s restaurant, or pick up groceries (including fresh bread and more cake – hurrah) at the shop for picnics or meals cooked on the barbecues. If you’ve not quite exhausted the nippers, they can expend excess energy at the adventure playground or gather chums for a game of beach volleyball. Should the weather put a passing dampener on alfresco frolics, cosy up indoors to watch satellite TV, pick a book from the library or play table football. All-weather cheffery can be carried out in the indoor kitchens, and there are a couple of fridges here too for stashing any leftovers. Other helpful amenities around the site include a launderette, free wifi access and a toilet block with hot showers, baby facilities and disabled access.

Local attractions

Danube Island, opposite the site, has heaps of activities along its 20-kilometre length: walk, cycle or roller skate along its flat paths, play ball games or hang out at the playgrounds. There’s a surprisingly lengthy stretch of beach here (given that you’re in a landlocked country) so bring your cozzie over and settle in for sunbathing and swimming or head to a watersports centre for waterskiing, sailing and paddleboarding on the river. Hire bikes from the site (or bring your own) and you can head out on the Danube Bike Path, one of Europe’s most popular cycle routes. It’s part of the EuroVelo 6 riverside route that covers some 3,653 kilometres as it travels across 10 countries, and is a great way to get out to the Danube-Auen National Park (20 minutes to the south) or north to Nussdorf, 40 minutes away, to walk in the vineyards, visit traditional wine taverns and take in some fab views over the city. Vienna, 30 minutes away by bike or public transport, has numerous attractions including Schönbrunn Palace and the Schönbrunn Zoo, the oldest zoo in the world. Stroll through the historic city centre to St Stephen's Cathedral, wander to the beaut Rathausplatz and peruse the paintings at the art history museum. It would, of course, be a crime to miss out on coffee and cake in one of the famed traditional Viennese coffee houses – top spots include Hawelka, Landtmann, Griensteidl and Café Central. A trip on a traditional tram along the Ringstraße gives you a chance to take the weight off for a while and grab a view of lots of the city's buildings: the Opera House, the Burgtheater, the National Library, the gateway to the Hofburg among them. The attractions of the Prater amusement park and the interactive exhibitions at the Museum Quarter are popular with kids.
