  • Eco-friendly site next to a forest with spectacular valley views
  • Amusement park, skiing, nature reserve and bike park all within 35km
  • Summer pool, chip shop and cafeteria with meals and Belgian beer
Seeking a friendly Familial vibe, spectacular valley views and easy access to a smashing range of outdoorsy activities? Camping Familial ticks all these boxes – and several more besides. Bordered by a forest and near a river, it's in a quiet green setting four kilometres from the town of Malmedy, well placed for nature spotting at the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve, getting stuck into a variety of watersports at Bütgenbach and Robertville lakes, and tackling walking and cross-country skiing at Baraque Michel. On site, a roomy outdoor pool is open during July and August, and there are six weeks' worth of kids' clubs and evening entertainment for all ages. Plenty more is available all year round, including a playground for swinging and sliding, plus a ping pong table and supervised archery for slightly bigger types. The cafeteria sells a good range of food across several menus, and if you’re a fan of tasty Belgian beer, you can wash your eats down with one of those too. For something quick, on weekends and bank holidays between April and October, a portion of the friterie’s chips will go down a treat, or for a snack of the self-catered variety, pick up some bits from the small on-site grocery shop. This is an eco-friendly site that encourages guests to recycle wherever possible, so ample containers are dotted around.

Local attractions

Within a speedy seven kilometres are several sporty and sightseeing options: a bike park with mountain bike trails and daredevil jumps; the Spa-Francorchamps motor racing circuit (home of the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix), and a couple of cultural spots including Malmedy's Baugnez 44 Historical Center and the Malmundarium cultural centre. The historic town of Stavelot is 10 kilometres away. Within 15 kilometres are hiking, birdwatching and nature spotting around the heath and woods of the Hautes Fagnes (aka ‘high fens’) nature reserve. For a bit of adrenalised adventure, watersports are available at Bütgenbach and Robertville lakes, while cross-country skiing and more scenic hikes are over at Baraque Michel and – Belgium’s loftiest point – the Signal de Botrange. For a family day out, take the kids to Plopsacoo 20 kilometres away, or to survey the animals that roam the safari park at Aywaille; while you’re there, check out the caves of Remouchamps. If you're after something more serene, spoil yourself with a stint in a spa or have a casino-based flutter.
