  • Rural site in a natural park 20 kilometres north of Canela
  • Outdoor tables and grills, internet access and bathrooms
  • Walking trails, natural swimming pools, abseiling and ziplining nearby
Swing through the trees, swim in natural pools, stride along jungle paths – if you’re up for a bit of a Tarzan-type adventure, Parque da Cachoeira could be the place for you. Venture 20 kilometres north of the southern Brazil town of Canela to find this splendid park, all native forests, fields, and natural features such as the impressive Cará river waterfall. The site’s been set up in a traditional stopover point where travellers’ caravans would cross the Santa Cruz river, close to a historic iron bridge called the Passo do Inferno (no fear, the ‘step from hell’ is much less terrifying than its name suggests). Settle in here for a bit and you’ll be close to all sorts of activities including hikes, abseiling, ziplining and bungee jumping, all of which can be followed up with a cool dip in one of the nearby natural pools (splashing down via waterslide if you wish). The folks on site are on hand to help with pointing guests in the right direction for all these antics, or to the self-guided ecological trail on site. As you may expect from a jungle escape, this isn’t a place with heaps of fancy facilities. Plenty of essentials are in place though: the site’s got outdoor tables and open-air grills, a washing-up area and bathrooms with toilets and gas-heated showers. A snack bar opens during the daytimes on weekends and holidays only. Desktop internet access is at reception and some areas have electric lights but clever souls will pack a torch to aid their getting around at night.

Local attractions

Come set for outdoorsy adventures: a stay here demands that you make the most of your jungle surrounds. Walking trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty are just outside the site, some leading to waterfalls and others focusing on wildlife spotting. Natural pools are a short walk away and an activity centre next to the site can hook you up with various ways to swing through the air, including abseiling, climbing, ziplining and bungee jumping. For something a little more relaxing, there’s tennis, horse riding and beach volleyball at Parque Fazenda da Serra (20 minutes’ drive), or you could head into Canela (half an hour) to visit its cathedral and peruse its collection of museums (dedicated to cars, fashion and, perhaps somewhat unexpectedly, the Beatles). Venture a little further to Gramado (45 minutes) for a whole heap of family-friendly attractions: Mini Mundo miniature town, Gramado Zoo, Alpen Park theme park and the winter-themed Santa’s Village and Snowland are all worth a visit.
