Seeking peace, quiet, greenery and fresh air on your travels? Consider then dallying a while at Daler Camping, a small family-run site in Daler, a teeny village about 12 kilometres north of the German border. Bring a bike or a comfy pair of walking shoes with you, for this place thrives on nature and you’ll no doubt be wanting to get out and about as much as poss to explore the best of the locale. Best pack your binoculars too for visits to the Vadehavet National Park, a fine place to spot resident seals and migrating birds. Cast your eyes to the skies around dusk and you may well catch the display known as 'black sun', where thousands of starlings create swirling patterns as they congregate in the evening light. Settle in for a stay here and you’ll also be within easy reach of the Wadden Sea coast – it’ll only take you about 10 minutes to drive to a lengthy stretch of sandy beach (or 20 minutes if you’re taking advantage of the flat lay of the land to hop on your bike). Beyond the mainland are more wide beaches, beaut dunes and assorted watersports on the islands of Rømø and Sylt (the latter requiring a brief scooch over the border into Germany). The combo of fresh air and a healthy dollop of activity is a well-known precursor to a pleasingly deep sleep, so you’ll be needing somewhere nice and hushed to rest your head of a night. The folks at Daler Camping aim to aid your sweet slumbers by keeping the distractions to a minimum here, banishing all ideas of noisy activities and entertainments to ensure a restful environment. They’ve not skimped on the essential facilities though – there’s a cosy common room with books and games for your quiet evenings in, and free wifi for your day-to-day planning. Ravenous ramblers can be fed on meals created at the barbecue hut or in the kitchen (complete with microwave, oven and washing-up area), and any acquired muck washed away with a free hot shower (accessible to all comers thanks to the disabled and family-friendly facilities in the toilet block).

Local attractions

If you’re travelling on two wheels, there are loads of great cycle trails around the area, including those that’ll take you down to the nearest town, Højer, in 15 minutes or so. When you’ve arrived, take a tour of the Højer Mill (the highest of its kind in northern Europe, fact fans) and pop into the town’s church, part of which dates back as far as the 12th century. Pedal off from the site in the other direction and in 20 minutes or so you’ll be at the beaut baroque Schackenborg Castle and maybe catch a talk or concert. Nature-based wanderings aplenty await along the coastline of the Vadehavet National Park, which takes in both part of the mainland and the island of Rømø, accessed via a causeway. For your best shot at seeing the native seals, join a seal safari from the visitor centre (around a 45-minute drive from the site). The beaches stretch for kilometres, both on the mainland and on the island so you should be able to find a suitable spot for a bit of quiet sunbathing or sea paddling. Rømø’s also a great place for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Cross into the very tiptop of Germany and cross the causeway to Sylt for more gorgeous seaside walks, watersports (surfing lessons, paddleboarding, sailing and windsurfing among the offerings) and to come face-to-fin with North Sea and tropical fish at the aquarium.
