  • Family-friendly site in rural Alsace, six kilometres from Mulhouse
  • Swimming pool, playground and fishing pond
  • Guided cycling and Nordic walking trips several times a week
Ooh, there are some excellent Alsace activities around here. Actually there are several, to keep you occupied for quite a number of weeks hiking and biking these surrounds or, if that thought makes you feel faint, having dips in the local lake or pottering around the nearby museums. And then of course there's the Alsace Wine Route, accessible a short drive away... These happy Haut-Rhin times can all be had at handsome Camping Parc la Chaumière, a family-friendly site in the Alsace village of Heimsbrunn six kilometres south of Mulhouse. A lake with a huge sandy beach is four kilometres away for lazy lounging; Colmar and that wine route within 45 minutes' drive, the Ecomuseum of Alsace half an hour away, and Germany's biggest theme park Europa Park just over an hour's drive from here. If even any of that seems a tad too far to travel, explore the immediate surroundings instead on one of the guided cycling or Nordic hiking excursions leaving several times a week from the site. And if you prefer to amble on a solitary or family trip through the surrounding forest? A detailed map of the woodland trails is available at reception. Taking things yet easier, Parc la Chaumière also has a fishing pond, for carp angling in these fine green forest surroundings; a pool for lazy floats, and a playground, table tennis and pétanque court for sprog shenanigans and grownup competitions. A food shop with bread service is around too for your Alsace convenience; for even more of the same, inns, creperies, rotisseries, pizzeria and breweries are all within a short distance of the village, for Alsatian treats such as baeckoffe, sauerkraut, matelotte, chicken in riesling…

Local attractions

The most excellent city of Mulhouse a mere six kilometres from Parc la Chaumière is famed as the creative capital of Alsace, home of several museums including the Cité de l’Automobile and the Musée Français du Chemin de Fer, respectively the biggest car and railway museums in the world. Arty sorts have a fine arts museum and a museum of modern art to goggle at, as well as the trompe l'œil paintings of the 16th-century Hôtel de Ville. Speaking of Alsace capitals, if you're anywhere around the Haut-Rhin department and are a dedicated follower of vino, a must is the city of Colmar, about 50 kilometres away on the lengthy Alsace Wine Route. Colmar's buildings of Vosges sandstone are pretty spectacular as well, along with its old covered market, and its handful of museums including the Unterlinden Museum, a toy museum and a zoological and ethnographic museum (try saying that after some local vino) dating back the mid-19th century. Boat trips on Colmar's Little Venice canal district also come highly recommended. For family days, take some time for the Ecomuseum of Alsace (26 kilometres), an open-air site covering the rural life of the Alsatians of the 19th and 20th centuries. Then get the kids along to the Little Prince Park (29 kilometres), the first aerial park in the world; the chattering creatures of Monkey Mountain, just over an hour away, and the rides and amusements of Europa Park, Germany's biggest theme park and also within just over an hour's drive.
