  • Peaceful 20-hectare park with free carp, roach and pike fishing
  • On the main road between Bergerac and Périgueux
  • Spacious pool surrounded by greenery, with plenty of sunbathing space
Fancy a getaway at a peaceful rural site, close to major towns and deep in wine country? If that sounds like your Goldilocks zone, park up for your hols at Orphéo-Négro, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Douville in the Dordogne region of the south of France. Dordogne is easily explored from Orphéo-Négro: the region is criss-crossed by more than 100 kilometres of marked trails, so pull on your walking boots, don your bike shorts or (and?) clamber into the saddle to follow them on foot, bike or horseback. If urban exploration is more your speed, the site is equidistant from the stunningly scenic towns of Bergerac and Périgueux, so head to either for shopping, museums and eats. Of course, there’s so much to do on site, you may never feel the need to leave it – you can walk Rex (and yourself) on the large exercise field, go game-set-match on the tennis courts, challenge your friends to a game of ping pong, embrace your inner putter with some miniature golf, try out the outdoor bowling alley or rack up the points in pétanque, then slow it down with some fishing in the on-site lake. No doubt you’ll work up an appetite fairly quickly here, but you’ll never have to worry about going hungry: there’s an evening restaurant, a bar serving pizzas and snacks, a small shop selling fresh bread and pastries, and you can always fire up the barbecue yourself.

Felt so unwelcome. Horrible staff, dirty pool and derelict play area.

Local attractions

Start your Dordogne getaway with trips to Périgueux (for the Vesuna prehistoric museum, Perigord Museum of Art and Archaeology and the spectacular Cathedrale St-Front) and Bergerac (the National Tobacco Museum and National Wine Museum would be solid choices), before exploring what’s below the surface: Proumeyssac’s gulf, Rouffignac cave, and cave paintings at Les Eyzie-de-Tayac-Sireuil and Lascaux are all within an hour’s drive of Orphéo-Négro. Attention, tipplers! You might hear through the grapevine (sorry) that this part of Dordogne is dotted with vineyards and wineries, so you’re going to want a designated driver that will gladly follow you from tasting to tasting. Try La Grande Maison, Château de Montdoyen, Pécharmant and Château de Monbazillac, all within half an hour, then venture further afield for the rest. There’s more to châteaux than wine and there are plenty of prime choices nearby to keep history buffs enthralled, with particularly stunning examples to be found in Lanquais, Montréal and Neuvic. For the more pious historians, the 12th-century Cadouin Abbey is a must…
