  • Hillside setting next to the Lousse river, 35 minutes from Domme
  • Pool, paddling pool, trampoline, bouncy castle, bar and restaurant
  • Shuttle service for Dordogne canoe trips
Now this is a lovely little spot... Camping Le Trel in the Dordogne is on a hillside by the Lousse river, with several trails in its surrounds for hiking, mountain biking or horse riding. There's easy access to Dordogne canoe trips too with a shuttle service to and from the waters from the site, and it's a cinch to get to fab Dordogne spots in the wider region including comely villages, splendid châteaux and huge cave systems. The grass pitches here are spacious, shaded and by the river, for cooling and scenic berths on a four-hectare setting a kilometre and a half from the small Dordogne village of Saint-Pompont. The splendid medieval city of Sarlat is 35 minutes' drive away. Leisure facilities are excellent, with a pool and a padding pool, a bouncy castle, a trampoline, a pétanque court and table tennis, alongside enough to keep your cuisine needs covered at the snack bar, communal barbecues and grocery shop with fresh bread and pastries.

Local attractions

Hiking, mountain biking and canoe trips can all be arranged from the site: just ask the team for info. There are old villages, castles and even more ancient caves all around the region, such as the three handsome communes of Domme, La Roque Gageac and Beynac, all within 25 minutes' drive and all must-sees. Around the same distance is medieval Château de Castelnaud, overlooking the Dordogne river and facing Château de Beynac: now restored, these days it's home to an acclaimed museum on medieval warfare. About 40 minutes' drive north are the caves of Roc de Cazelle, inhabited since prehistoric times and part of the world-famed prehistoric centre of Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil. The site has reconstructions, caves and regular – free – summer workshops in prehistoric pastimes like fire lighting and flint carving; drive 10 minutes further north after that for a look at the spectacular replica of the cave at Lascaux.
