Peaceful holidays by a lake in among the splendid scenery of Europe's biggest national park: you'd be daft to say non. Family-friendly Camping Le Lac De La Siauve is in among the spectacular landscape of volcanoes, gorges and valleys of the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park, in a green and peaceful setting with hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities available in its surroundings. The site is set over 10 hectares with views of the nearby Bort-les-Orgues lake and with direct access to the water. Among its many facilities are a covered heated pool lifeguarded in the summer season, a bowling lawn with six lanes, a football pitch, ping pong and football tables, a playground with bouncy castle, and two jetties available for rent with access to a boat and waterski ramp. A bar and snack bar are open daily in high season; a mini pool bar is also open on summer afternoons depending on the weather. Reception is open daily and has books available to borrow.

Local attractions

The Bort-les-Orgues reservoir is one of the biggest in France, covering over 20 kilometres and three departments, the Corrèze, the Cantal and the Puy-de-Dôme. Cruises are available to explore its waters, including around the 15th-century Château de Val on a rock above the lake, one of the best preserved castles of the Haute Auvergne. A 3.3-kilometre walking and mountain bike trail starts at the entrance of the site. There are also several short and medium length hikes on a circuit of 16 walks nearby around Lanobre and Bort. You could also try river or lake fishing, for trout, zander, pike and carp, or take it easy with a visit to the spa town of Le Mont-Dore. At the highest point of the Massif Central (1886 metres), take the cable car at the Puy de Sancy, whizzing up 455 metres in four minutes for spectacular Massif views.
