  • Near the Caen ferry port, a kilometre from Ouistreham
  • A short drive from the D-day landing beaches
  • Direct access to the canal of the Orne river
Camping Le Riva Bella is in a nifty neck of the woods for those travelling through Lower Normandy and seeking a stopoff on their way south, as it's near the Caen ferry port in Ouistreham and handy for a rest on the way from Portsmouth if you're coming from Blighty. But many travellers come here from other lands to stick around for a while on site too, as Le Riva Bella is also a short drive (11 kilometres) from the D-Day landing beaches and only five kilometres to the war memorial of the Pegasus Bridge. (There's direct access from the site too to the canal of the Orne river and evening strolls or daytime cycles along its banks.) Le Riva Bella is a no-frills site but has toilet blocks with free hot showers (refurbed in 2017), a playground and a washing-up area among its amenities, plus a pool that's open in summer. The marina, casino and shops of Ouistreham centre are just over a kilometre away.

Local attractions

Travellers coming to Lower Normandy to explore the history and heritage of World War II have the Pegasus Bridge and the Pegasus Museum a few minutes' drive from Camping Le Riva Bella, a memorial to the 6th Airborne Division in the Normandy landings and to Operation Deadstick. The American War Cemetery and the five D-Day beaches – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword – are also within easy reach. Along the Normandy coast, make the hour-and-40-minute trip to see Mont Saint-Michel, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that's one of France's most recognisable and most visited sites, and to the town of Avranches, which holds the manuscripts of Mont Saint-Michel, one of the biggest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in all of la belle France. Ouistreham, a kilometre or so away, has the Museum of the Atlantic Wall and the Musée du Débarquement no 4 Commando alongside its shops and restaurants.
