Brace yourself for bucketloads to do at and around Les Chevaliers de Malte: it’s right next to a river, has stacks of facilities for families and is within easy reach of plenty of Normandy attractions. This is a friendly family-run site set among a wooded park in the medieval town of Villedieu-les-Poêles, a few minutes' stroll away along the riverbank. (If you’re of an arty leaning, you’ll also be interested to learn that the town is a designated Ville et Métiers d'Art, which means that artisans still work in studios and sell their well-crafted wares here.) Facilities on site are many and very well-maintained, and you’ll always be pointed in the right direction by the plentiful signage. Follow signs for ‘La piscine’ to get to Les Chevaliers de Malte’s heated outdoor pool, which also has a spacious sun terrace alongside; away from the water, get busy at the multisports pitch, playground, ping pong tables, trampoline and pétanque court. Foodwise, eats are sorted at the on-site snack bar, and plenty of eating options are around the nearby town centre. The park’s accessible bathroom block has free hot showers and is heated to make sure your morning and nightly routines are as pleasant as poss, and has a baby bathroom to keep the small ones in fine fettle.

Local attractions

Sporty sorts are well catered for here: equine excursions can be had at a horse riding centre eight kilometres away, while watery sports such as canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding are available at the nearest beaches 25 kilometres from base. If you'd like to up the ante with something slightly more adrenalised, head to Viaduc de la Souleuvre for bungee jumping, giant swings and rail sledding. For family attractions, visit the aquarium in Granville, or have a day at the zoo at Champrépus to see lions, antelope, zebra and many more befurred beasties, before ending the day there at its adventure playground (the helter skelter is screamingly fab). Historic attractions abound around here too: there’s the copper workshop, Cornille Havard bell foundry and Norman Furniture Museum in Villedieu-les-Poêles, a short riverside stroll away, as well as Hambye Abbey and Mont Saint-Michel within 35 kilometres. For a longer day trip away, the world-famed Bayeux Tapestry and D-Day landing beaches are both within 90 kilometres.

From the manager: Bonjour, C'est vrai que Villedieu les Poêles est une très joli ville.. Pour ce qui est du camping, il n'est pas vieillot, malgré ses 53 ans.. et nous l'entretenons du mieux que nous pouvons ! Vous êtes une des seules clientes à nous dire qu'il est mal entretenu...Vous avez peut être eu la malchance de passer au sanitaires (mixtes pour ceux du bas et pas "étranges" 2 wc et 2 douches séparés...) derrière des gens malpropres mais malheureusement nous ne pouvons rien faire contre l'incivilité de certains campeurs... Désolés que vous ayez gardé une image négative de notre camping.. Cécile et Franck les Gérants qui se donnent à 300 % pour leur camping et qui ont parfois des clients peu tolérants....

Liked: Nette camping op loopafstand van het centrum van een leuk dorpje. Goed zwembad en speelvoorzieningen voor de kinderen.

Disliked: Deel van het sanitair wat verouderd maar alles wordt wel goed schoongemaakt.

Liked: The onsite facilities and the EN-SUITE cabin on the pitch we booked , overall a lovely site and the adjoining town was very pretty

Disliked: We booked this site because the Pitchup description stated that the staff spoke both French & English, well thats not correct , If you are not fluent in French speaking then do not visit this site !!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Liked: Well run organised site, with a family facilities,

Disliked: The swimming pool is outstanding, a great asset, however as a trained lifeguard I was alarmed by the many patrons (mainly children) who simply did not follow the pool rules, potentially dangerous. Limited number of toilets and showers created queues at peak times
