  • Family site surrounded by rivers and woods, two kilometres from Gacé
  • A 20-minute drive to Camembert and 40 to Alençon
  • Playground, internet and heated washrooms with accessible facilities
You could idle around for hours without meeting another human soul at this peaceful and remote Lower Normandy farm, in a beaut rural setting in the Orne department. Fret not, however, if your first reaction on hearing 'remote' is 'too far away from days out, patisseries and a source for the local vino', as Camping Les Petits Champs is well placed for northern France amenities and activities despite its secluded setting: it's a mere minute or two's walk to the local village of Saint-Evroult-de-Montfort, the town of Gacé is a couple of kilometres away, and department capital Alençon is just over half an hour's drive from here. Around the region, over a dozen comely old towns and villages are within a 10-kilometre radius, and if it's activity you're after, long lengths of hiking and cycling trails are easily accessed from here as well as good fishing spots. There's space aplenty on site too for play and outdoor games; bring whichever flavour of ball you prefer to kick or bounce about. Les Petits Champs has a play area, internet access and heated washrooms with accessible toilets and hot showers.

Local attractions

For town and village hopping as well as sourcing those patisseries and local vino supplies, get along to Gacé five minutes' drive away; teeny Norman commune Chaumont within 10 minutes' drive for hiking on the marked trails around the village, and to Camembert (20 minutes) – oui, for the cheese. A drive of 40 minutes' south will land you at Alençon, the capital of the Orne department, once the seat of the dukes of Normandy, and famed for its lace for centuries. Learn the full ornate tale and peer at the world's biggest collection of needle lace at Alençon's museum of fine art and lacework (Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle), where you can also pore over pics from the 17th to 19th centuries by the likes of de Champaigne and Courbet. Bookworms should also like a browse around the town library in the old Jesuit college, which holds over a hundred medieval manuscripts, and all types should make a strenuous effort to get along to the lively Alençon market, held on Thursdays and Saturdays at Place de la Magdeleine.
