  • Holiday resort with heated pool near Beaune in Burgundy
  • Vineyards and castles in the surrounding areas: Couches 2km away
  • Designed for famillies with small children
A truly good life would have you here most of the year round. But go for the next best thing and book a week or three at Burgundy’s La Bonne Vie: you’ll find that the cuisine, the vino, the countryside and the culture are all mighty fine indeed. The Saône et Loire setting of this site is in countryside home to Beaune, Chalon-sur-Saône and Autun, and among vineyards and châteaux, forests, old towns and traditional Burgundy villages. Local village Saint-Maurice-lès-Couches is reachable within about 20 minutes’ walk by the ancient Roman road of Agrippa, via forest, creek and spectacular countryside, and the vineyards, wine tastings and fab views of the medieval Château de Couches are within a couple of kilometres. The park itself is mighty fine too (see pics), set over four hectares of scenic land bordered by forest, vineyards and pastures, and swathed with trees, plants and plenty of open space including a pretty pond. Drive in through the wine barrel entrance (again, see pics), and check in at reception for a friendly welcome, an ice cream or cold drink, and a sample or two to take away for later from the selection of local wines. Make for the heated pool next, to lazily dip in the water or idly sunbathe on the loungers; parasols are here too if you seek sanctuary from the Burgundy sun. The kids, meanwhile, have go-karts to whizz around in; a ball game area, swings and a ping pong table to bounce around at, and chickens, ducks and rabbits to coo over. Pony rides are available in high season.

Local attractions

Start out on foot to reach the local village of Saint-Maurice-lès-Couches, along the former Roman road of Agrippa starting from the entrance to the park. The path goes uphill along the edge of the park and then along the forest and past a creek to end up in the village with its 12th-century church. Saint-Maurice-lès-Couches is one of five local communes making up the Couchois vineyard region (Burgundy Côte-du-Couchois is the AOC you seek for souvenirs). Another is Couches, home to the medieval fortress of the Château de Couches and its wine tastings and guided tours. The Château is just under two kilometres from La Bonne Vie and can be reached by car, foot or bike. Take to two wheels around the Burgundy Voie Verte or cycle greenway to investigate more of the region’s vineyards, starting off on the path adjacent to the Canal du Centre (two kilometres), back around Couches and on to St Leger-sur-Dheune three kilometres from the site.
