  • 60-acre estate with riverbank fishing
  • Indoor and outdoor pools with waterslides
  • Horse riding, canoe trips, archery and many more activities
Why try Ty Nadan, near the town of Locunole in Brittany's fab Finistère? The reasons they are beaucoup: there are activities galore (Ty Nadan is the only site in Finistère where such a range is on offer); there's a splendid riverside setting; there are beaches nearby; there's a 25-hectare estate to explore… and just for grownups if you so desire, a babysitting can be arranged on request… But you'll probably want to have the kids accompany you as you get stuck into the many activities available here – not least because you'll surely hear about it otherwise. Horse riding, river canoe trips, trout and salmon fishing, archery and paintball are all among the adrenalised adventures you can book for an extra charge: just check what's on offer when you arrive and make your excited plans accordingly. There's stacks more to do on this lush river and estate landscape – and without even exploring the beach and trad towns options within easy reach. First up after a day on or in the river should be a serious splashing session at the indoor pool complex, where you can swim in the heated water, assist the kids in paddling in their own pool, whizz delightedly down the 60-metre waterslide that ends in a cave, or make your moves at a summer aqua gym session. As you might be a tad tired after all that, totter over to the hydrotherapy pool, where a big Jacuzzi as well as a spa and bench with massaging water jets are there to perk you up. The complex also has heated changing rooms, showers, a water temperature of 28°C and an air temperature of 27°C. And then… there are outdoor pools too (and also heated). The main pool (2.2 metres deep and 18 metres long) is the one for serious swimmers, while the metre-deep pool with five (five!) waterslides has been specially built for thrillseekers. A paddling pool is reserved for kids, who can also careen down their own slides. And then… there's yet more. Other leisure facilities include pool tables, a pétanque court, mountain bike hire, table tennis, tennis courts, indoor badminton courts, a football field, a volleyball court and a basketball court: just bring your own sports kit. And after all that? Food, natch: your hunger and thirst will be slaked at the Ty Nadan restaurant with terrace, or at the bar, takeaway or grocery shop… or perhaps, tiredly, back at your family base by means of a barbecue and a rather large drink. The site also has a safe at reception, a launderette, internet access and wifi.

Local attractions

If you ever do manage to stagger off site, adventures of sand, watersports, hiking and biking all await, along with more peaceful pursuits such as town and city sightseeing for those who've had all the action they can take right on site. Rocky creeks to explore and long stretches of golden sand to bask on are within 20 minutes' drive of the site, or within easy reach if you fancy a venture further: Brittany has hundreds of kilometres of coastline for you to find, a third of the country's total. Over 400 kilometres of Brittany hiking trails, much of it around the sea, are around for adventurers to find too. And then… some serene urban sightseeing? The handsome town of Quimperlé, at the crossroads of the Isole, Ellé and Laïta valleys, has small medieval streets to wander, an upper and lower town, corbelled old houses, a basilica, the Maison des Archers (archers' house) and Sainte Croix Abbey. Or there's the famed old town of Concarneau, France's third trawler port, especially known for its 14th-century walled town, its fishing museum and its Fête des Filets bleu or Blue Fishing Nets festival. Also take a trip to Quimper, the capital of the Cornouaille region at the confluence of the Steir and Odet rivers. Another old centre is here to wander, along with a 13th-century cathedral, the shopping area of Rue Kéréon and the scenic Old Town. Worth a visit too are Quimper's two acclaimed museums, the Musée Départmental Breton and the Musée des Beaux Arts, with its collection of paintings from Breton artists and the Pont Aven School. To view others getting adrenalised instead, scramble along to the famed Roches du Diable or Devil's Rocks a few minutes from the site. They're the annual venue for an international canoeing competition mentioned in the Michelin guide, and worth a spectating look whether you're an experienced canoeist, have never set foot in such a vessel, or just dabble in the art.
