Ever thought of staying in the grounds of a château…? Turn such musings into reality by nesting for a weekend – or much longer if your boss can spare you – at Safari Tent Holidays at Domaine des Ormes, a site plonked next to a 13th-century castle in Brittany. There are weeks’ worth of activities to keep you busy at this spot: think a waterpark with 12 slides (open in summer), an 18-hole golf course with an exclusive clubhouse and an underground nightclub (which is soundproofed so it won’t disturb guests who like to snooze early). Rather have a swift nightcap than stay out till the wee hours? Swig on some of the complimentary wine given on arrival or order a tipple at the laidback bar overlooking the site’s lake. Fishing and sailing are popular on this body of water in the daytime and dry activities like horse riding at the park’s equestrian centre are also on offer. During high season, the team organises plenty of other events and activities to take part in, but try not to let all the entertainment keep you from exploring the local area – Safari Tent Holidays at Domaine des Ormes is a 10-minute drive from the character-packed village of Dol-de-Bretagne, for supermarket errands as well as wanders around the historic streets, and 40 minutes from the harbour town of St Malo’s ancient walls. Sightseeing starts from near this park in the village of Dol-de-Bretagne with its cathedral and location high above the marshes spreading out to Mont-Saint-Michel Bay (10 minutes’ drive). Wander beside the medieval houses, then make your way to the seaside town of St-Malo (40 minutes) for sandy beaches, towering old walls and the La Demeure de Corsaire house belonging to an 18th-century privateer. From St-Malo, trace the wide valley of the Rance upstream and seek out serene spots along it before visiting the city of Dinan (35 minutes) with its cobbled squares and traditional Breton homes. Once that’s ticked off, another couple of must-visit sights in northern France include Mont Saint-Michel, 40 minutes away, a pretty island topped by a monastery, and the L'Ange Michel theme park (50 minutes). Up for crossing borders? The British islands of Jersey and Guernsey are accessible by boat from St-Malo and have pristine beaches and nature reserves to dawdle through.
