  • Riverside site in Vouvray, 10 kilometres from Tours
  • In a region renowned for its many châteaux and vineyards
  • Playground, pétanque court, bar, picnic area and games room
How serene does this site look? For a peaceful plot alongside a gently flowing river in a land carpeted by the vineyards of the Loire Valley, pitch up at Camping Le Bec de Cisse in the tiny town of Vouvray, 10 kilometres from the centre of Tours. There’s plenty of sightseeing stuff to keep yourself occupied with in these parts, as this area is full of historic towns and attractions around Tours, Amboise and Blois, plus a host of well-known castles are within easy reach too such as Villandry and Chenonceau. If you've worked up a thirst wandering around all the châteaux in the locale, then the vineyards around Vouvray will keep you tippled up with tours and tastings. During leisurely days on site, kids can amply entertain their small selves at the playground and games room, and gentle family games of (naturally) pétanque can be had over at the site’s pitch. When it comes to foodie stuff on site, you can pick up bits at the grocery shop for al fresco eats at the greenly scenic picnic area, or head to the bar for a tipple or two while the tiddlers are off making new pals. Pitches here are superly roomy and surrounded by lots of green space and mature trees, and the spacious and accessible sanitary block – with toilets, warm showers and a washing-up area – is maintained splendidly well by a cheerful and friendly site team. Also smashingly, should you run into trouble with your campervan then fear not: the park has a handy campervan service area too. Wifi is also available throughout the site should you so wish to stay in touch with the world beyond.

Local attractions

Surely one’s first port of call around here should be the vineyards around Vouvray, of which there are several within 10 kilometres. Ensconce oneself in the wine culture of the region with tours and tastings, and while at it, pick up a bottle or two of your favourite plonk to take back to base. Tons of historic attractions are around here too, all within 25 kilometres: there’s a cathedral, the Compagnonnage Museum and Botanic Gardens in the handsome town of Tours, and you can visit the museum (/former home) of famed artist Leonardo Da Vinci at Château de Clos Lucé and its gardens. Château de Chenonceau and Château de Villandry are also an easy drive away. Give tiddlers something to scream about with a visit to Gadawi Park for airborne zooms down ziplines and traverses around its treetop courses, or take them for a slightly more sedate canoe trip on the River Loire from Amboise, both within 18 kilometres of Camping Le Bec de Cisse. If they (or you) are into wild critters, take a safari train trip around Beaumarchais Reserve animal park and keep your peepers peeled for great and fallow deer, boars, ostriches and bison, and follow it up with a tasty game dinner at the reserve’s cosy inn.
