There's so much to celebrate at this Champagne-Ardennes site you may not know where to begin. Probably the beach for most sorts of holidaymaker, but then there's also a splendid forest setting, a huge lake for fishing, a water playground and a busy entertainment programme – among quite a bit more. Camping Le Lac d'Orient is a waterside site, with a long length of golden sand edging the huge Orient lake: motorboats, jetskis and waterskiing are all a firm no-no here, making for calm and safe waters for swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing. More water – and quite a lot of it – awaits too at the site's indoor pool and fab waterpark with big waterslides, and at the shallow water playground with slides and toys for the kids. Out of the water, an activity and entertainment programme running during July and August includes sports such as volleyball and pétanque, as well as occasional shows, concerts and dances in the evenings. There's a kids' club too, with crafts and other junior activities; a bouncy castle, and a big play area with jeep and slides: it's pretty easy to see why the site team calls this place a 'paradise for children'… And you might not even have told them about the site's location yet. Camping Le Lac d'Orient's Aube department setting 15 minutes' walk from the town of Mesnil-Saint-Père is half an hour's drive from the famed theme park of Nigloland, one of the most visited parks in France after Disneyland Paris and Parc Astérix.

Local attractions

The site is surrounded by the spectacular Orient Forest Regional Natural Park, a vast wooded landscape made up of the Orient forest and the region's three main lakes, Orient, Temple and Amance. Take a woodland water or bike ride to see what nature you can spot among the trees and around the water, or clap on your arty hat/ beret to find a place to paint; this region inspired the artist Renoir, who had his summer home to the south of the forest at Essoyes. The fab theme park of Nigloland is less than 30 minutes' drive away, at Dolancourt. Once the kids have been bribed with a day there, bundle the family into the car and make for the smashing medieval town of Troyes, the ancient settlement that was the birthplace of the Order of the Knights Templar in 1129.

Liked: availability cleanliness of toilets location

Disliked: Lack of options for food (compared to when it was a really good restaurant) Pitches used for overnight stops (small and difficult to get in to) Overall decline in standards - I have stayed here for two weeks in the past, but would not consider this as an option again. profit is in the way of customer service - the pricing is on the high side of unacceptable

Disliked: Size and condition of pitch and overall tired appearance .Showers smelt of urine. Expensive for what you got.

Liked: Loved the site lots to do for everyone especially the kids, very spacious pitches, clean facilities, staff were very friendly and helpful. Over the road from hhe site is a beautiful lake with lots of activities.

Disliked: I didn't like that the site and the area were packing up for the season when we were there which I thought was very early.

Liked: Facilities clean. Pool clean. Staff friendly. Location was lovely.

Disliked: We went at the end of season and things were shutting down, which was different from website.
