'Why not escape to a countryside stay on the edge of a lake,' wisely asks the team of the Champagne-Ardenne's Les Chalets de la Vingeanne. Why not indeed – this is a hugely pretty waterside setting an easy kilometre from its nearest village of Longeau-Percey, smashingly set up for families and kids, and with swish accommodation and facilities to keep all ages contentedly settled and occupied for weeks. You could, for example, angle to teach the kids fishing in the lake's waters for a placid holiday pastime, or trek along to the adventure centre opposite the site for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, sailboarding, mountain biking, archery and quite a bit more. Around the surroundings, an eight-kilometre path around the lake starts at the site, and the Vingeanne gorges are five kilometres away for hiking and cycling. Langres is half an hour away. And you'll want to angle for some time on site too... Accommodation is in comfy chalets for long lingering breakfasts; after that, there's a covered and heated pool to splash around in, and a sauna and Jacuzzi for grownups to submerge their good selves. Evenings should see several hours on the restaurant's semi-shaded terrace, which faces the beach for maximum viewsome meals – or for keeping an eye on sandy kids while you get on with the essential holiday business of working your way through the extensive restaurant menu.

From the manager: Good morning dear Anonymous I have a recommandation from the system to address my answer correctly and courteously So I sincerely thank you very much for your warm, motivating and rewarding comment as well as your excellent rating It doesn't matter because you arrived one evening after reception hours, you only stayed one night, so you don't know anything about us dear Louise That's the reason why your comment is not like the others With kind regards Florence

Local attractions

The lake alongside the site is the 199-hectare Lac de Vingeanne, a popular spot for birdwatching as well as fishing. The eight-kilometre hiking trail around the lake is where to start if you're an ornithological sort: information boards are along its length and you should spy several migratory bird species along the way. The Haute-Marne part of the Champagne-Ardenne region is famed for its lakes: as well as birdwatching at Vingeanne, water fans can try waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing at Lac de la Liez, the biggest watery body in this 'Land of Four Lakes'. Less actively, Liez has pike and carp fishing and another sandy beach to spend time at, and Lac de Charmes and Lac de la Mouche both have hiking routes around their shores. All three lakes are around 25 minutes' drive from the site. Take a trip too to Langres, one of France's designated towns of art and history, and famed for its medieval ramparts which include the biggest fortification wall in Europe, or venture 55 minutes to Dijon and the Burgundy wine trail. A treetop adventure centre is eight kilometres away.
