  • Set around an 18th-century forge among champagne vineyards
  • Indoor pool, sun terrace, fishing lake, archery and live music nights
  • Bar-restaurant with terrace and local wine/champagne and cheeses
How does a stay among the Champagne vineyards in the grounds of an 18th-century lakeside farmhouse sound… with access to the sandy beaches of Lac du Der Chantecoq and Château Cirey-sur-Blaise… are you fizzing with excitement? The peaceful and well-appointed resort of Camping La Forge de Sainte-Marie is well placed for waterside days even inland, with a sandy beach at Château de Cirey 40 minutes' drive away and another at Europe's biggest artificial lake an hour and 10 minutes from the site. On land, local village Thonnance-les-Moulins is a couple of kilometres away, Gillaumé is 15 minutes' drive and Joinville is 20 minutes. A full range of excellent on-site facilities await on site too, such as the heated indoor pool and large grassy sun terrace for splashing and lazing time in between sightseeing trips. Then there's the lakeside bar and restaurant, with a big terrace overlooking the lake, regional dishes from set and à la carte menus, and snacks to take away (during high season, the takeaway service extends to pizza delivery direct to your pitch). You could continue your French food odyssey by sampling fine local wines and champagnes and the region's best cheeses out on the restaurant terrace too – but don't fill up too much, because Sainte-Marie staff say the tractor trips to the regular barbecues nearby are absolutely not to be missed. After spending the morning on a gentle woodland walk while the kids are thoroughly entertained with archery, football and other outdoor games via the kids' club (aimed at ages four to 14), spend the afternoon on the multisports field competing in archery or pétanque tournaments. Fishing fans can also cast their line into the trout-filled lake if they pick up a permit from the local off licence, and evenings are covered too, with live music nights and a campfire to sit around and tell tales.

Local attractions

Do you like champagne? Course you do… and around here there's lashings of the bubbly stuff on offer: make plenty of time for investigating the local cellars and region's fizzy wine, and for trying regional charcuterie meats and artisan cheeses. Get out and about on one of the site's recommended hiking or cycling trails – pick up info at reception and follow one of the many routes that begin from the grounds. Alternatively, the Château du Grand Jardin in nearby Joinville is just the job for a leisurely afternoon of strolling around historical landscaped gardens. Lac Der-Chantecoq – Europe's largest artificial lake – is about an hour and 10 minutes' drive from the site and has boat rental and 250 kilometres of marked walking and cycling trails.
