Armbands at the ready… for a swift stroll from the lively family site of Camping La Saline, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, will have you splashing around in the Loue river in minutes. Float around in your own inflatable vessel or canoe, get stuck into a spot of fishing, or do a bit of paddling: the Loue's current is slow and its waters shallow, so it makes an excellent option for families with younger kids in tow. Park up at this pretty spot for a pitch near the river and within easy driving distance of the handsome city of Dole, and a short walk away from the famed Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans. There’s oceans of outdoor space on site for grownups, little kids and big kids alike: poolside days can be spent splashing around in the water or alongside on the terrace, and out of the water is a pitch set up for lazy family games of pétanque. When hunger strikes, a pizzeria-style snack bar is on site: Sebastian and his helpful team will grill up all sorts of morsels for guests; otherwise, there’s a shop selling snacks and essentials, and you can pick up all your barbecue and picnic bits and pieces up at the hypermarket a short drive away (or have your burgers cooked to order by the friendly site team). Pitches are spacious, level and marked out by high and mature hedges.

Local attractions

A greenway is next door to the site, which could potentially take pedallers all the way out to the Mediterranean Sea. The handsome UNESCO-listed Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans is a 20-minute amble away too; built during the reign of King Louis XV, this historic spot was once one of Europe’s most important salt-producing places, using timber from the vast Chaux forest nearby to fuel its process. Speaking of which, the woodland walks and cycling trails of this spectacular woodland area – France’s second-largest – are a speedy six-minute drive from base. Elsewhere, another pleasant historic spot is the spa town of Salins-les-Bains: while here, don’t miss its Romanesque church, and most definitely make time in your itinerary to book yourself a spa-based pamper.
