Fancy a Swiss Family Robinson-style stay among a mature 27-hectare woodland in Normandy? Sorted. In the centre of Upper Normandy about half an hour's drive from Rouen, Les Cabanes de Fontaine-Châtel is in a forested setting within easy reach of outdoorsy activities such as strolling and cycling around the department's 1,400 kilometres of trails. Accommodation here is high in the trees in swish, comfy and eco-friendly treetop cabins, each individually designed to fit the the trees supporting it. The treehouses are all totally off-grid for proper treetop retreats, but the owners have added a bathroom block to the site so you don't have to forego hot showers and flushing toilets. And while some huts can be reached only by clambering up a ladder, some have been designed to be easily accessible to those with reduced mobility. To preserve the peaceful vibe, the site can be reached only on foot or by bike from the parking area. No cars means that this peaceful place is a tiptop spot for wildlife watchers too: look below your treehouse terrace and you're likely to tick wild boars, deer, squirrels, pheasants and other birds off your wildlife spotting list. You can take forest strolls and cycles for leisure time on site too, and when you return to base book yourself in for a hot stone or relaxation massage. Breakfast is included when you book a stay here: simply hoist up your hamper when it's delivered in the morning. Dinners can be booked with at least seven days' notice.

Canyon 1 bedroom treehouse

Liked: Wij vonden de boomhut fantastisch! De locatie was prachtig en het zag er heel romantisch en iddylisch uit. Het personeel was kundig en duidelijk met de uitleg (wat ook wel nodig is met een boomhut). Daarna werd het personeel ook vriendelijk en meedenkend. Echt een top man! Het ontbijt dat je op moest takelen in de ochtend was een hele leuke ervaring. Het heeft gewoon iets schattigs! Bij de receptie zijn normale douches en wc's, waardoor de luxe vergelijkbaar is met een goede camping (+/- 10 minuten wandelen door het bos). Mijn vriendin had nog nooit gecampeerd en vond het totaal geen probleem! Echt een aanrader!!

Liked: Very friendly and welcoming, great atmosphere, scenic woodland walk from the carpark and really nice view of the fields and trees. It felt completely private, barely noticed other guests. The site had good facilities: composting toilet in the tree house and additional toilets (for more privacy) and hot showers in the visitor center. Breakfast was delicious - coffee, orange juice, warm croissants and fresh baguette, also found some very nice cafes in other towns a short drive away. It was a really good idea to have a tourist guide in the cabin. Would definitely recommend staying here and would happily stay here again.

Drakkar treehouse

Liked: Our 8-year-old thought staying in the treetops was the most exciting thing ever. Out in the woods at night with only candlelight to see by certainly makes you feel like you have escaped. In the mornings, hauling the breakfast basket up really was something to look forward to and gave a very relaxed shape to the day. Inside, the cabins have what you need, but no more. The beds are very comfortable, and the dark guarantees a deep sleep. Although the site itself is very remote, there are lots of things relatively nearby, so it's a good place to explore from. It's easy to get to Rouen and there are many other places to visit in the area.

Liked: l'environnement, le calme et le décor ainsi que le petit déjeuner bien copieux.

Disliked: nous n'avons pas pu dormir dans une des deux chambres car il y avais beaucoup trop d'insectes, d'araignées et autres petits animaux, nous avons été contraint de dormir dans l'autre chambre à deux dans les lits 1personnes car celle ci n'avais pas de petits habitants.

Local attractions

There's plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do around here: test your steel among high ropes courses, ziplines and Tarzan swings of the big tree climbing park in Préaux, within 20 minutes' drive, or try a trip on horseback from one of two riding centres over in Mauquenchy. For water-themed activity, the sands and sea of Dieppe are less than an hour away and several pools are within 20 minutes' drive. Over 1,400 kilometres of trails network the Seine-Maritime department, and the site owners highly recommend the Avenue Verte, a former railway line between Dieppe and Paris transformed into a path for non-motorised vehicles. Bring a bike or take a simple stroll; car parks and picnic areas have been set up along the route for breaks and feeds. For something to keep the boys and girls on their best behaviour, the fairytale-themed family attractions, petting zoo and sky-high rides of Parc du Bocasse theme park are around 25 minutes' drive from Fontaine, and animals such as cranes, flamingos, monkeys, kangaroos and wallabies are over to see in Clères's zoo.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 5 day(s) of arrival.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Quiet hours must be respected between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
The management reserves the right to deny access or terminate the stay of those guests whose behaviour is deemed unsuitable. No refunds will be offered.
