  • Family-friendly site just outside Sassetot-le-Mauconduit village
  • A 10-minute drive from the white cliffs of Normandy's Alabaster Coast
  • Three hectares of space with a playground and pétanque
It’s not just the bird that’s white at family-friendly Camping L'Oiseau Blanc – it’s but a gentle 10-minute drive to the gleamingly white chalk cliffs of Normandy’s Alabaster Coast, a seaside stretch so spectacular it’s provided inspiration for artistic endeavours by Monet, Renoir and Debussy among others. Bring your watercolours or music manuscript along if you too are a wandering minstrel or artist; equally worthy things to pack are boots for rambles on the coastal paths around the cliffs at Fécamp and Étretat, waterproofs for watersports at Veules-les-Roses, and beach kit for seaside days at Les Petites-Dalles. You might also consider bringing a bike for exploring the local cycle routes, golf clubs to play a round with an eye-popping view at Étretat’s golf course, and clothes you don’t mind getting mucky on the treetop trails and paintball games at the nearby adventure park. (And you may also need a sizeable car.) There's plenty provided to keep you and accompanying small sorts pleasingly occupied on this three-hectare site too: you could gather chums to kick a ball about, keep the sporting endeavours a little more low-key with a game of pétanque, or let the littlies run loose at the playground. You’ll also not need to come armed with foodie supplies, as the site is within strolling distance of Sassetot-le-Mauconduit, a little village with a butcher, baker, grocery shop and a cosy little restaurant.

Local attractions

There are lots of places along the coast where you can admire the dazzlingly white cliffs – among the best are Étretat, where stone arches and needles sit just off shore, and Fécamp, home to a fishing harbour and museum... and the Benedictine palace that’s also a distillery for the local liqueur (a herbal concoction also known as Benedictine). It’s not all about the chalk though: little beaches are dotted along the coastline, with top spots including Les Petites-Dalles 10 minutes' drive from the site, or the more far-flung but pleasingly lengthy stretch running south from Saint-Jouin-Bruneval, 45 minutes away. Étretat is also home to a gorgeous golf course with spectacular sea views (don’t lose your ball over the edge here) and a riding centre where you can take lessons or gallop along the beach. In the other direction is Veules-les-Roses, the place to go for sailing and kayaking, and to hire windsurfs or paddleboards. If you’ve ever fancied flying like a bird, take the clan to Woody Park 20 minutes away, to follow trails through the forest canopy or stay down at ground level for paintballing, laser games and – how fab – inflatable sumo wrestling.
