Fall head over heels with Paris (40 minutes by metro) and its boulevards of patisseries, restaurants and shops. Make time too for the bigger museums and scratch landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and the Notre-Dame Cathedral from your bucket list. Find the Eiffel Tower in its miniature incarnation at Disneyland Paris (35 minutes’ drive), packed with friendly characters, rides and rollercoasters for what’s likely to be a lively day out. It's worth considering Parc Astérix too – it's a little further afield (an hour and 15 minutes), but great for more theme park marvels. While the fantasy world is endearing, the land of châteaux and palaces becomes a reality in Fontainebleau (an hour), where you can go hiking and rock climbing in the forest on one side, and on the other, visit the ornamental splendour of a 12th-century palace. Embark on another trip back in time to the medieval town of Provins (35 minutes), then visit the inspiration for the Palace of Versailles, Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte (40 minutes) and gawp over the stately gardens and impressive Italian-style architecture.
