  • Five kilometres from the UNESCO site of the Palace of Versailles
  • Easy access to Paris
  • Heated pool, paddling pool, board games and restaurant
A location fit for a king. And a queen. And perhaps small unruly royals too. What a fab and prime position has Huttopia Camping Versailles, only five kilometres from the spectacular and famed French royal palace of Versailles and its jaw-droppingly scenic gardens. (And if your other/lesser half isn't that much interested in French history? Entice their interest with the Versailles TV series, and take them along anyway to see the royal splendour.) And… Paris is near here too. About 25 kilometres from Versailles village, to be exact, easily reachable by bus or RER train, for days around the Champs-Élysées, Louvre, Montmartre and the Moulin Rouge – or just gazing intellectually around your smart self from a streetside café and espresso. And… you'll need peace after all that. So head back to Camping Versailles for serene days in among all the sightseeing, where you can have a gentle swim in the heated pool while the kids let off all their remaining steam in the paddling pool. There are board games around for your leisurely pleasure as well, and a pétanque court and table tennis if you want to get slightly more competitive. Get refuelled at the site restaurant and bar or via the barbecue area with supplies picked up in Paris, then get ready to get active again: bike hire is available on site and cycle routes galore are in the local area.

Local attractions

To mighty, magnif and fab Versailles, the palace of the French kings started by Louis XIV (but of course) when he shifted the royal court to here from Paris. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site these days (but of course), famed for many many sights such as the Hall of Mirrors, the lush palace rooms, the King’s Grand Apartment and the Museum of French History… and the spectacular accompanying gardens, among the most visited in France. Amble along to Versailles town after the palace for the Marché Notre-Dame, the lively and thriving market started by Louis when he moved his lot to these parts. Food stalls are on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday mornings; other goods are displayed on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. From Versailles–Chantiers station, take the Paris RER line C for as many days as you can manage in the French capital. The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are its most famed sights, but you should also make time for Montmartre and its Moulin Rouge and Sacré-Cœur Basilica, and the works of Warhol, Matisse and Picasso at Centre Pompidou.
