  • Lakeside site 10 kilometres from the medieval citadel of Carcassonne
  • Near the Canal du Midi and bordered by the Aude river
  • Pool, restaurant, play area and games room
Pitch up and plonk yourself down here for a plot next to a large and lush lake... plus a place to stay that's within easy reach of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the legendary hilltop town of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. Camping Village Grand Sud is a family-friendly park in a greenly scenic Aude setting (take a peek at the site pics above) and is well placed for exploring Cathar country and its many ancient castles; visiting Limoux, famed for its four AOC wines, and day tripping out to the beaches of Narbonne, an easy hour’s drive away. Covering 11 hectares and surrounded by a huge private lake, this soothing spot is also edged by the Aude river, with both waterways providing cracking carp fishing opps if you have your own angling kit. On site, swim and slide the days away at the two swimming pools: a large one with a waterslide and one next door for toddlers to paddle in. If you manage to tear yourself away from the poolside (or the kids from the pool’s slide), activity options on land at Grand Sud include ping pong, snooker, table football, tennis and pétanque. Kids’ club activities run in July and August too. For eats, fill up on the likes of fried chicken, pizzas and regional dishes over at the snack bar terrace, open every day, and during the evenings in July and August.

Local attractions

Camping Village Grand Sud is right in Cathar country, a princely land of castles and abbeys, and an hour’s drive away from merveilleux Mediterranean beaches and spectacular Pyrenean peaks. Close by, take a barge tour to the Canal du Midi or bike between Carcassonne and Trèbes; other attractions worth seeing within easy reach include the Limousis caves, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the huge chasm of Cabrespine, one of Europe’s biggest cave systems. If you like a good long wander, then you’re well catered to around these parts: the Aude department is crisscrossed by more than 4,000 kilometres of well-maintained waymarked trails suitable for seasoned and occasional hikers alike – just ask the friendly team at Grand Sud to point you in the direction of the nearest. If winery touring’s more your thing, then you’re in a good spot for that too: many well-known (and tasty) wines are produced in the region, including Cabardès and Corbières, Muscat de Rivesaltes and the four AOC wines produced around the city of Limoux.
