  • Friendly site on the banks of the Dordogne, with its own private beach
  • Regular entertainment and activities throughout the day and evening
  • Pool, paddling pool, library and bar-restaurant with terrace
What a lovely location has Camping Le Saulou in the popular Limousin department of Corrèze. For it's just on the banks of the splendidly scenic Dordogne river, a tiptop spot both for landing trout and for snoozing contentedly in the shade under tall green trees. (Or on the sand – the site has its own private beach.) As with the river, you can take your pick of active options or lazy lounges on site too: a whole heap of stuff is on offer here, including a pool and a paddling pool, a pétanque court, a roomy playground and a library. The bar-restaurant sorts hassle-free meals and has plenty of room outdoors among handsome green surroundings. The friendly team also arranges regular activities for all ages including archery for the grownups as well as kids' and teens' clubs every morning in high season (artsy stuff is organised too if your offspring tends more towards the creative). Evening entertainment such as gigs, karaoke and dancing are held in high season. Camping Le Saulou has a shop selling basics for when you're sorting your own snacks. There's bike hire for when you want to pedal off to explore the Limousin countryside; bike instructors leading mountain bike trips, and canoe hire for when you want to drift gently along the Dordogne.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Location and pool. Pitch was right on the banks of the dordogne river that was flowing beautifully on the night. So tranquil. The pool is also huge!

Local attractions

Go canoeing or kayaking right from the site among the green and peaceful surroundings of the Dordogne, or rent a bike from the team to go on a mountain bike day arranged by the Camping Le Saulou instructors. The river is also a popular spot in the region for fly fishing; if you've never angled before, introductory classes are available for a small fee. Round and about the site are heaps of cultural and natural highlights: make your way for example to the three waterfalls of Murel; the Tours de Merle, the ruins of a 12th and 15th-century castle set in spectacular surroundings, and the splendid Padirac Chasm or Gouffre de Padirac, a 99-metre chasm and vast cave system that can be explored by boat. Several comely and traditional Dordogne villages are within easy reach too, such as Autoire, Carennac, Loubressac, Sarlat and medieval Rocamadour, balanced on the side of a cliff.
