A lakeside Limousin setting – how splendid. As the name hints, Camping du Lac de Mondon is right next to a 15-hectare lake, where peaceful times prevail, and is in the Haute-Vienne department for further chilled-out times alongside the Benaize river. Need a little more than pretty views to keep you going? Land yourself at the site facilities for days on end instead: you can take your pick from lounging/hurtling around the outdoor pool with slide (closed on Mondays for cleaning) while the kids get energetic at the big play area, or borrow a book or board game from reception to get stuck into on the grass, or avail of the wifi at reception to see where in France you ought to go next… The site also has a bread service and a laundry room with a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Do you feel you really really must iron clothes while on hol? If oui, make straight for reception where you'll find everything you need.

Local attractions

Camping du Lac de Mondon has easy access to local hiking and cycling trails and the lake next to the site has pedal boats for hire. Both tennis and archery are available close by for a small charge. If you're a foodie – and who wouldn't be in any part of France – make it your mission to tackle as much of the local cuisine as poss, such as the traditional clafoutis and hazelnut cakes, all washed down with Limousin cider and – maybe – walked off afterwards with the geocaching activities available in the area courtesy of Haute-Vienne's Terra Aventura. Other nearby popular places to visit are the medieval village of Saint-Benoit-du-Sault, 13km away, and the Creuse town of La Souterraine within 18 kilometres. The site's nearby town of Cromac is a 55-kilometre drive from Limousin's capital Limoges, which is well worth a day trip to see its cathedral, art museum and the botanical garden.

Liked: Stunning view of lake On-site restaurant (not associated with the site) Local woodland walk

Disliked: The manager emailed us the day before our arrival to say the pool was closed (we already knew this) and the "sanitary facilities" would be closed. We took this to mean the showers associated with the pool, so we were not concerned. However, on arrival, we found ALL the toilets and showers were locked. The manager said, "I sent you an email about this." We were shocked and it was too late to go elsewhere. Fortunately, the manager did then take pity on us and opened up the nearest toilet/shower block so we could use it but there was no toilet paper or soap, so we had to take our own. We were the only (touring) people staying on site those two nights, so perhaps he was trying to reduce his workload but when we've booked a site with toilets and showers, we don't expect to find them locked. The water in the showers only lasts about eight seconds before it turns off, so you have to keep pushing the knob - or learn to wash with one hand while keeping the button pushed in.

Liked: Excellent pitches on a very attractive site with views over the lake. Very friendly and welcoming. Good facilities, pool not open Mondays. Only brief swimming trunks aloud.

Disliked: Booked site because it had a pool... POOL IS CLOSED EVERY MONDAY FOR CLEANING!!!!! No mention of this on their website. Was exceptionally annoyed!!

Liked: The pool looked "really cool" according to my teenage boy, but unfortunately it closed before we arrived. Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff and fairly level pitches- may need chocks, the chap helped when we had a flat tyre, a very genuine person. We only stayed one night, but would return and stay longer next time. Many thanks, Rachel, John and Theo.
