  • Peaceful green site between Toulouse and Andorra
  • River and private woodland for guests to explore
  • Pool, playground and barbecue areas, plus fishing nearby
What a greenly scenic site this is. Between Toulouse and Andorra, Camping L’Arize is set high above sea level (415 metres, to be precise) among a smashingly peaceful green haven. You’ll get a very warm welcome from owners Stéphanie and Cédric too who – previous guests often comment – are always on hand and particularly accommodating. This splendiferously scenic site has spectacular views across the foothills of the Pyrenees and a friendly familial atmos; a river also runs right through the site for fishing and waterside walks, plus you’ll have direct access to a private wooded area for peaceful walks and nature trails. Lots of leisure time will inevitably be spent at the outdoor pool, and out of the water a ping pong table, a pétanque pitch and a playground will keep grownups and kidlets plenty amused. Family barbecues can be had around the communal barbecue points, and if you’re on your hols here during July and August, foodie facilities also at your disposal include a takeaway service and the option of picking up freshly baked bread and croissants for your breakfast banquets. Also in peak season the L'Arize team puts on activities in the evening to keep guests entertained, as well as a kids' club for tiddlies ages five to 11. The park’s wifi service can be accessed for a small fee and, if needed, you can make use of baby changing facilities and a laundry room with washers and dryers during your stay.

Route directions

From Toulouse take the A61 towards Carcassonne/Montpellier and then take the A66 to Foix. From Carcassonne: take the A61 towards Toulouse and come off at the exit for Bram / Foix. After 20km when you are near Mirepoix, take the D12 on the left towards Foix. Then take the N20 to Foix and come off at first exit for Foix. Once in Foix, follow the signs Saint-Girons/Tarbes. When exiting Foix on the N115, drive for approximately 18km until you reach the entrance to the village of La Bastide de Sérou. Turn left on the D15 and the campsite is approximately 1.5km down this road just after the equestrian centre. Closest airports: Toulouse and Carcassonne are approximately 85km away (1 and a 1/4 hour's drive by car). Closest train station: Foix station is approximately 20 minutes away. Closest village bus stop: La Bastide de Sérou is approximately 1.7km away.

Local attractions

The little Arize river bordering the site is a hit with the kids, as well as with anglers for its trout fishing opps, and a 40-kilometre 'voie verte' route is less than two kilometres away for pedals and ambles through the spectacular countryside that surrounds. Plenty of outdoor sporting opportunities are within a 30-kilometre radius too, including canoeing, canyoning, climbing and caving. For horsey adventures, an equestrian centre is a very close 400 metres from the site entrance; take the tiddlers along for pony rides, or embark on one of several forest hikes from there. Another good active option nearby is the smashingly scenic 18-hole golf course, three kilometres away. For fun educational and foodie jaunts, the eco museum in Alzen, eight kilometres away, covers the region's rural and culinary heritage, or a little closer to home five kilometres away, lovely local cheese producer Eric is a welcoming sort and will happily host you for farm tours and lessons in local agriculture, as well as to meet the stars of his operation, the resident goats. Also in Alzen, kids (and animal-appreciating adults) can marvel at cute and creepy critters such as iguanas, turtles, crocodiles and snakes at the reptile farm. More swimming and fishing opps await over at Mondely lake, seven kilometres away, where there’s a small pebble beach and picnic tables primed for peaceful family days out; for those unfazed by going some way underground, you can hop on a little boat to float along Europe's longest underground waterway, Labouiche river, 13 kilometres away. Also worth a look see are the Museum of Traditional Crafts 20km away at Argol; the nearby Château de Foix (which has a bed once snoozed in by Henry IV), and the prehistoric cave of Mas d'Azil, 16 kilometres away.
